The exhibition introduces residents and the visitors for which Russia is famous to the diversity of tropical fauna. More than 80 species of rare creatures are presented here: from majestic pythons and spectacled caimans to fragile tree frogs and mysterious tarantulas. The Exotarium is ranked among the top five specialized exhibitions in the country, welcoming thousands of delighted visitors every year.

A special feature of this place is its educational mission — each inhabitant lives in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat, and detailed information boards reveal the secrets of their habits and lifestyle. This is a space where a scientific approach meets a sincere love for nature, creating the atmosphere of a real jungle adventure.

What to Do

Visiting the exotarium is a unique chance to observe the hidden lives of tropical inhabitants. Here you can see how masterfully a chameleon camouflages itself, how a lurking alligator snapping turtle hunts, or why a spectacled caiman "cries." Each animal has its own personality, and an attentive observer will surely notice their talents, whether it's the masterful stillness of a stick insect or the graceful movements of a royal python.

For those who want to learn more, fascinating guided tours are available. The staff shares amazing facts that can't be found in ordinary textbooks. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to take vibrant photos with the animals, and the bravest can even opt for a tactile encounter with a non-venomous snake under the supervision of a specialist.

Exotic pet enthusiasts will find professional support here: exotarium experts provide consultations on the care and treatment of exotic pets. You can also purchase rare feeds here, making the exhibition an important center of expertise for all terrarium keepers in the Volga region.

Getting There

Finding the exotarium is very easy — it is located in the very heart of the city on the main pedestrian street at 18 Bolshaya Pokrovskaya St. The Sverdlov House of Culture building is easily recognizable and is within walking distance of iconic sites like the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin and Minin and Pozharsky Square.

If you plan to arrive by public transport, it is most convenient to get to the "Ploshchad Minina i Pozharskogo" or "Teatr Dramy" stops. Trolleybuses No. 9, 11, 12, and 17, as well as numerous buses and fixed-route taxis (marshrutkas), stop here. Tram No. 27 will take you to stops in the historic center, from where it is about a 10-minute walk to the destination.

For those who prefer comfort, taxis are always available. However, please note that Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street is pedestrian-only, so a car can only drop you off at the nearest intersection. Parking in this area is very limited, so visitors are encouraged to use public transport or ride-sharing services.

History & Facts

The history of this unique venue began on May 19, 1996. At that time, keeping terrariums was just starting to gain popularity in the country, and the organizers faced enormous challenges, from a lack of specialized equipment to a shortage of information on caring for rare species. The first inhabitants were gathered bit by bit from private collections, foreign nurseries, and zoos.

Over more than 28 years of operation, the modest exhibition has grown into the largest exotarium in the Volga region and is ranked among the top five in the country. Many animals have lived here since the day it opened, thriving and regularly producing offspring — which is considered the ultimate recognition of the staff's expertise. Today, the collection features more than 80 species of amazing creatures from all over the world.

The location of the exhibition is just as interesting. The exotarium occupies premises in a building constructed in the 19th century in the Late Classicism style. Originally, it housed the Noble Assembly, and later the building became the House of Trade Unions, maintaining its status as an important cultural and architectural landmark of Nizhny Novgorod.

Time Needed

To leisurely view the entire collection, read the information plaques, and observe the animals' behavior, visitors usually need between 1 and 2 hours. If you choose to use the services of a guide, the visit time may increase slightly, but the experience will be much more vivid.

Since each terrarium features detailed information about the species and its habitat, a self-guided tour turns into a fascinating educational journey. This amount of time is quite enough for children to meet all the inhabitants and for adults to take memorable photos.

Working Hours

The exotarium is open to visitors daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The exhibition operates without lunch breaks or days off, making it easy to plan a visit even with a busy tourist schedule.

Please note that the operating hours may change slightly on public holidays. Before your visit, it is recommended to check the official website or look for the latest information on the institution's social media pages.
