The sculpture by Vladimir Polyansky depicts the People's Artist in an unusual, very human way. He is presented not on a high pedestal, but sitting on an ordinary garden bench right at sidewalk level. It seems as if the actor has just stepped out after a rehearsal from the neighboring Drama Theater and sat down to rest, watching the bustle of passersby. This design creates a wonderful illusion of a living presence and invites anyone interested to keep the master company.

The monument is an important focal point for students of the theater school named after Evstigneev and all connoisseurs of classic cinema. It is valued for its lack of pretension and the warmth it brings to the look of the ancient city. The object's high rating confirms it: this is not just a monument, but a truly "living" landmark with a unique energy.

What to Do

The first thing to do when you find yourself on Teatralnaya Square is to sit down next to the bronze actor. The monument's design specifically encourages visitors to sit on the bench beside him. This is the perfect moment for a heartfelt photo: the composition is created so that in the picture, you will look like old acquaintances having a quiet conversation. Pay attention to the details: the actor thoughtfully holds a cigarette in his hands, his gaze fixed somewhere through time.

After meeting the monument, be sure to take a walk along Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street. This is the city's main pedestrian artery, where street musicians and artists perform. A ten-minute walk from here, on Varvarskaya Street, is the theater school where Evstigneev studied. There, you can see a memorial plaque dedicated to the actor.

For full immersion in the atmosphere, we recommend attending a performance at the Nizhny Novgorod Drama Theater. The theater building is just a few steps from the sculpture, and such a cultural evening will be a logical conclusion to your visit. And if you are traveling with friends, you can organize a small quest to find other fun urban sculptures that abound in this part of the city.

Getting There

Finding this popular spot is easy, as it is located at the intersection of the city's main tourist routes. The monument is situated on Teatralnaya Square, directly by the building of the M. Gorky Nizhny Novgorod State Academic Drama Theater, at the very beginning of the pedestrian part of Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street.

If you prefer public transport, it is most convenient to take the metro to Gorkovskaya station, and then walk for about 10–15 minutes along Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. Bus and tram stops such as "Minin and Pozharsky Square" or "Drama Theater" are also within walking distance. From the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, you can reach the sculpture on foot in just 10 minutes.

For those traveling by taxi, simply specify the Drama Theater as your destination. Keep in mind that Teatralnaya Square is a pedestrian zone, so the car will drop you off as close to it as possible. If you are traveling by private car, it is better to leave it in the paid parking lots near Minin Square, as there are no parking spaces directly at the monument.

History & Facts

The history of this monument is inextricably linked to the deep respect the city's residents have for their outstanding fellow countryman. Evgeny Alexandrovich Evstigneev was born in Nizhny Novgorod, and it was here, at the local theater school, that he began his creative journey. Even though the actor spent most of his life in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod residents have always considered him "one of their own."

The grand opening of the sculptural composition took place on September 2, 2006, and was timed to coincide with the City Day celebrations, as well as the actor's upcoming 80th birthday. Interestingly, the project was originally intended for installation at the Novodevichy Cemetery; however, the actor's widow, Irina Tsyvina, insisted that the monument be placed in his hometown, in a more lively and informal setting.

The work was created by sculptor Vladimir Polyansky. Officially, the object is considered an artistic composition rather than a monument, which allowed it to avoid excessive officialdom and create that very trusting image of "Uncle Zhenya" sitting down to rest on a bench. In 2003, Evstigneev's name was officially given to the Nizhny Novgorod Theater School, from which he once graduated.

Time Needed

To simply view the monument and take a few photos, you will need very little time—literally 15–20 minutes. This is quite enough to examine the details of the sculpture and sit next to the bronze actor on the bench.

However, given the object's location, it is better to budget from 1 to 2 hours for the entire area. During this time, you will have enough time for a leisurely stroll along Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, a walk through the theater square, and perhaps to buy tickets for an evening performance at the Drama Theater, which stands right behind the great actor.

Working Hours

The monument to Evgeny Evstigneev is part of the urban architectural environment and is located outdoors, so it is available for viewing 24/7. You can come here in the early morning to catch the monument in silence, or late in the evening when the theater square is beautifully illuminated by lights.

Access to the sculpture is free and open every day of the week, including holidays. There is no specific visiting schedule, but it is worth remembering that during large city events or before the start of performances, the square can be quite crowded.
