Monument to the heroes of the front and rear

About

This majestic memorial complex is the heart of patriotic life in the city of Ivanovo. The Monument to the Heroes of the Front and Rear is dedicated to the inseparable unity of those who fought on the front lines and those who forged victory in the factory workshops. In the center of the composition stands a monumental obelisk, topped with the figure of a soldier holding a machine gun, symbolizing the unwavering defense of borders in Russia.

The monument's artistic design gives it special significance: at the foot of the pedestal stand the figures of two Ivanovo weavers. These images serve as a reminder that the region has always been famous for its textile production and the hard work of women who replaced men at the looms. The Eternal Flame burns in front of the sculptures, flanked by legendary 1942-model ZIS-3 cannons.

The entire ensemble is situated on an artificial elevation on Sheremetevsky Prospekt. The thoughtful architecture and granite slabs bearing the names of 158 Heroes of the Soviet Union make the memorial one of the most recognizable and revered sites in the region. It is not just a historical location, but a symbol of the deep gratitude of descendants toward their ancestors.

What to Do

Visiting the memorial is, above all, an opportunity to connect with history. Climb the wide steps to the central figure of the soldier to take a closer look at the details of the sculptural composition. While standing by the Eternal Flame, you can pay tribute to the fallen with a minute of silence and then study the bronze medallions immortalizing the names of the region's prominent natives.

Of particular interest to military history enthusiasts are the ZIS-3 divisional guns installed on the grounds. These are authentic 1942-model weapons and serve as an excellent backdrop for historical photographs. Strolling along the well-kept paths of the memorial, you will notice beautiful flower beds that decorate the territory with bright inscriptions during the warmer months.

If you are planning a trip in May, be sure to stop by here on Victory Day. This is where the city's largest solemn rallies and parades take place, allowing you to feel the atmosphere of national unity. In the evening, the complex is beautifully illuminated, creating a solemn and peaceful mood for an evening walk along the avenue.

Getting There

The memorial complex is located at 58 Sheremetevsky Prospekt, at the intersection with 8 Marta Street. Getting here from the center of Ivanovo is easy: a taxi ride will take only a few minutes, while walking enthusiasts can reach the site on foot while enjoying the city's architecture.

For those who prefer public transport, buses and shuttle taxis (marshrutkas) heading to the "Sheremetevsky Prospekt" or "8 Marta Street" stops are available. History & Facts

The grand opening of the memorial took place on November 5, 1987. The project was created by sculptor Vyacheslav Klykov and architects Roman Serdzhiev and Viktor Snegirev. Initially, the composition included the central obelisk and the figures of weavers, symbolizing the labor heroism of the city, which supplied the army with fabrics and uniforms during the war years.

Over time, the complex has been supplemented with new elements. In 2010, for the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory, the Eternal Flame was lit here, and bronze medallions were installed with the names of 158 Heroes of the Soviet Union and full cavaliers of the Order of Glory. These honors emphasize the immense contribution of the region's residents to the common victory.

In 2014, the memorial became the burial site of an Unknown Soldier, whose remains were discovered by search teams near Pskov. It was established that the soldier served in the 235th Rifle Division, which was formed in Ivanovo. Thus, the monument became more than just a symbol; it became a truly sacred place of remembrance.

Time Needed

For a leisurely tour of the entire memorial complex, reading the names of the heroes on the medallions, and taking commemorative photos, 30 to 60 minutes is usually sufficient. This time is enough to feel the atmosphere of the place and examine the details of the sculptural group.

If your visit coincides with festive events, such as May 9 or the Day of Remembrance on June 22, you should set aside 1.5–2 hours in your schedule. On these days, the memorial becomes the center of large-scale city events that are very interesting to observe in person.

Working Hours

Since the Monument to the Heroes of the Front and Rear is a public memorial space, it is open to visitors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access to the Eternal Flame and the memorial plaques is free, and no entrance fee is charged.

Despite the open visiting schedule, to receive up-to-date information about special commemorative events or solemn ceremonies, we recommend periodically checking the city's official tourism portals.
