What to Do

Within the walls of the museum, visitors will find a deep immersion into the world of art. Main attention should be paid to the permanent exhibition of Russian painting, which features works that have become classics. While touring the halls of the Sirotkin mansion, be sure to notice the interior details — the stucco and architectural elements that serve as a magnificent backdrop for the artistic canvases.

History enthusiasts will find it interesting to study the collection of graphics and decorative and applied arts, reflecting the life and aesthetics of past centuries. For a more complete understanding of the context of the works, it is recommended to use an audio guide or join a tour: experienced guides will tell amazing stories about the patrons and founders of the collection, such as N. A. Koshelev.

In addition to viewing the paintings, the museum offers active participation in cultural life: lectures, temporary exhibitions of contemporary authors, and creative evenings are regularly held here. In the summer period, you can find plein airs and workshops for drawing right under the open sky. And after your visit, be sure to take a walk along the embankment — the view of the Volga will be the perfect conclusion to your cultural program.

Getting There

The museum is located in the very heart of the city at the address: Kremlin, bldg 3. Thanks to its central location, getting here is easy. If you prefer public transport, take trams No. 1, 2, 7, 9, 10, or 11 to the "Kremlin" or "Rozhdestvenskaya Street" stops. Buses No. 40, 52, and 90 also run to the "Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin" stop.

For those arriving from Strigino International Airport, a convenient option is bus No. 29 to the "Gorkovskaya" station, followed by a short walk. A taxi ride from the central districts will take between 10 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. If you are already walking near the Chkalov Stairs, the walk to the museum will take no more than 5 minutes.

If you are traveling by private car, you can park along the Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment or on the adjacent streets of the historical center. During the warmer months, many tourists prefer walking routes, combining a visit to the museum with a stroll through the ancient fortress grounds and admiring the views of the Volga.

History & Facts

The foundation of the museum was a significant milestone in the cultural life of the Volga region. Its creation was initiated by the famous artists Nikolai Andreyevich Koshelev and Andrei Andreyevich Karelin. The official decision to open was made by the City Duma in the summer of 1894, and by July 1896, during the All-Russian Industrial and Art Exhibition, the museum welcomed its first visitors in the Dmitrievskaya Tower of the Kremlin.

Among the most honored guests in the opening year were Emperor Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna. The collection was literally formed by the "whole world": a significant part of it consisted of gifts from the Imperial Academy of Arts, the painters themselves, and local patrons. Throughout its history, the museum changed several addresses until it settled in the magnificent mansion of the merchant D. V. Sirotkin in 1924.

After the 1917 revolution, the museum's funds expanded significantly through nationalized noble collections, which allowed for the creation of one of the best regional collections of Russian art in the country. Today, the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum continues to develop, combining the traditions of classical museum work with modern exhibition technologies.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore the main halls and get acquainted with the masterpieces of Russian painting, an average visitor will need about 2–3 hours. This is enough time to enjoy the permanent exhibition in the Sirotkin mansion and take a look at the temporary exhibitions.

If you plan to use a guide's services, participate in a thematic lecture, or a workshop, it is worth reserving at least 4 hours. Given the museum's picturesque location on the embankment, you should leave some time after viewing the collection for a walk with a view of the confluence of the Oka and Volga rivers.
