The zoo's collection is impressive in its diversity: it is home to about 130 animal species, with the total number of individuals exceeding 500. Special emphasis is placed on conservation—the enclosures house 45 species listed in the Red Data Book of Russia and the IUCN Red List, including graceful leopards and majestic European bison.

Despite its urban surroundings, the zoo creates an immersive atmosphere. Local wildlife coexists with exotic guests: cougars, rhesus macaques, camels, Indian porcupines, and sika deer. For residents and visitors of the Mordovian capital, this has become a favorite spot for family leisure and educational walks.

What to Do

At the zoo, an exciting journey into the world of wildlife awaits. The main activity here is animal observation. You can get a close look at mighty yaks, fluffy foxes, playful monkeys, and rare birds. A walk past the enclosures allows you not only to see exotic inhabitants but also to learn about their habits through informative displays.

For photography enthusiasts, this is a great place to capture vibrant shots. The animals are kept in conditions that closely mimic their natural habitats, providing a beautiful backdrop for photos. Additionally, the zoo actively develops educational programs, so a visit can turn into an engaging open-air biology lesson where you might learn about rare crane conservation or the stories behind new arrivals.

The zoo's infrastructure is designed for comfort: clean pathways, rest areas, and seasonal events make it an ideal spot for a family weekend. Children will love getting to know the residents of the petting zones (when available) and watching the feeding of certain species.

Getting There

Getting to this corner of wildlife is easy, as it is located right in the city center at 6 Pervomayskaya Street. A key landmark is the Pushkin Park of Culture and Leisure, a favorite spot for locals and tourists, which is located directly adjacent to the zoo.

If you're using public transport, numerous buses, trolleybuses, and fixed-route taxis (marshrutkas) stop at "Pushkinsky Park" or "Zoopark". From the Saransk-I railway station, you can take tram No. 3 or any bus heading towards the center; the trip takes no more than 20 minutes.

For those who prefer a taxi or private car, the drive from anywhere in the city center takes just a few minutes. Parking spaces are available near the entrance and along the park area. Thanks to its central location, the zoo is also easily accessible on foot during a stroll through the city's historical districts.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in 2000, when city authorities decided to establish a full-scale animal exhibition in the capital of Mordovia. The institution's official birthday is June 29, 2001—the opening was timed to coincide with the city's 360th-anniversary celebrations.

It all started with a small "animal corner," where the first residents included a leopard, a cougar with her cub, bears, and several foxes. However, the project developed rapidly: by 2003, aviaries for birds and waterfowl were built, administrative and veterinary buildings were completed, and the grounds were fully landscaped for visitor comfort.

Today, it is a modern municipal institution that, despite its compact size (less than 2 hectares), actively participates in rare species conservation programs. The staff takes pride in the fact that from a small collection of local animals, the zoo has grown into a significant organization with a rich collection of exotic fauna from around the world.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all the enclosures and meet the zoo's inhabitants, a typical visitor will need about 2–3 hours. The facility covers 1.8 hectares; it is compact and easy to navigate, allowing you to see the entire collection without getting too tired.

If you are planning a family visit, especially with young children, it is worth setting aside a bit more time—up to 4 hours. This is enough time to watch the animals play, take beautiful photos, and read the informative displays about rare species listed in the Red Data Book.

Working Hours

The zoo is open to visitors throughout the week, with no lunch breaks. The schedule remains consistent from Monday to Sunday, making it easy to plan a visit even on a weekday.

Opening hours: daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
