The park occupies an impressive territory of about 36 hectares and is divided into several functional zones. Its main feature is the 15 platforms in the upper part, each designed by representatives of the Soviet republics and filled with their national character. From the deck of any ship passing by Ulyanovsk, the famous memorial inscription "LENIN" is visible, skillfully planted from barberry shrubs.

Today, this unique park is a favorite place for walks thanks to its terraces, complex system of fountains, and alleys planted with rare species of trees and juniper. Here, the atmosphere of history blends harmoniously with modern landscaping, offering visitors the best panoramic views of the endless reaches of the Volga.

What to Do

The main activity in the park is taking informative walks across its numerous terraces. Visitors can embark on a real quest, searching for decorative elements from different republics: from Uzbekistan's elegant cotton boll to stone sculptures reflecting the culture of the Caucasus or the Baltics. This is a great opportunity to see a diversity of cultures in one place.

Fans of panoramic views should linger at the observation decks, which offer breathtaking landscapes of the Volga. Taking a photo in front of the giant barberry inscription is a must for every tourist. In the summer, the park is lush with greenery, making it an ideal place for picnics, reading books in the fresh air, or practicing yoga.

Thanks to updated lighting and convenient paths, the park is perfect for evening promenades, running, or cycling. Information banners installed in each zone allow you to independently study the history of the complex's creation, making your leisure time not only pleasant but also educational.

Getting There

The attraction is located in the heart of Ulyanovsk's historical district on Novy Venets. The main landmark is the Lenin Memorial building — it is most convenient to start your descent through the park terraces from there. You can reach the park by any public transport going to the "Leninskiy Memorial" or "Venets" stops.

If you are arriving at the Ulyanovsk railway station, a taxi ride will take about 15 minutes, or you can take bus No. 5. Travelers arriving at the airport will need about an hour on bus No. 13 or 30–40 minutes by taxi to reach the central part of the city.

For those who prefer a private car, parking is available at the top of the slope near Lenin Square. It is important to remember that the park's landscape involves significant elevation changes, so it is advisable to wear comfortable shoes for walking on the slopes.

History & Facts

The history of this unique site began after the abnormally cold winter of 1941–1942, when ancient apple orchards on the Volga slope perished. The idea of transforming the empty space into a blooming park was born during the war years, but its implementation only began in 1966. The project, led by architect Alexander Brosman, was timed to a grand anniversary — the 100th anniversary of V.I. Lenin's birth.

The park was created as a symbol of an unbreakable union: each of the 15 Soviet republics contributed to its construction. Craftsmen, architects, and gardeners came to Ulyanovsk from all corners of the country, bringing national sculptures and saplings of trees characteristic of their homelands. By 1969, the first landmark objects were ready, and by the end of the 70s, the park was a complete ensemble of 15 thematic zones.

An interesting fact is that for twenty years, from 1988 to 2008, a cable car operated here. It allowed tourists to comfortably descend from the high bank to the water's edge, covering a path of 562 meters. Today, the park is experiencing a new stage in its history — after a period of neglect, a large-scale renovation of engineering networks and the restoration of landscape elements has been carried out.

Time Needed

To leisurely walk through all the terraces, study the symbolism of the national zones, and take commemorative photos against the backdrop of the Volga, a typical visitor will need about 2–3 hours. This is the optimal time to enjoy the landscape architecture and feel the scale of the complex.

If you plan to relax in nature, spend time with children on the playgrounds, or organize a small picnic in the shady alleys, it is better to set aside half a day for your visit. Keep in mind that walking on the slopes requires some physical effort, so it is worth taking breaks to rest at the observation decks.

Working Hours

Friendship of Peoples Park is an open municipal site and is available for visiting 24/7 any day of the week. This allows tourists to plan their walk at a convenient time — whether it is early morning to catch the sunrise over the river or an evening visit under the glow of the streetlights.

The park's opening hours are as follows:
