The monument is a unique architectural composition: two massive walls of gray-blue granite with an inextinguishable flame burning between them. The left wall is decorated with a relief of a soldier-defender, while the right is dedicated to a woman-worker, symbolizing the unbreakable bond between the front lines and the home front. A special charm is added to the monument by the fact that the gap between the walls offers a majestic perspective of the Assumption Cathedral.

This is not just a historical monument, but a symbol of eternal memory and deepest respect for heroes. The simplicity of its forms combined with the spiritual context makes the Eternal Flame a must-visit for anyone who wants to truly feel the soul of the city.

What to Do

A visit to the Eternal Flame is, above all, an opportunity to pay tribute and spend time in quiet reflection. Tourists come here to appreciate the austere beauty of the memorial, created by the famous sculptor Lev Kerbel, and to examine the detailed bas-reliefs that tell the story of the people's feat.

Be sure to notice the landscaping of the surrounding area: the square is paved with neat tiles, and picturesque flower beds and lawns are laid out around it. On holidays, especially on May 9th, you can see a guard of honor made up of schoolchildren, which gives the place a special solemnity.

The memorial also serves as an excellent viewpoint. Thanks to its thoughtful architecture, the flame offers a symbolic view of the golden domes of the Assumption Cathedral, creating a perfect backdrop for commemorative photos and allowing you to feel the connection between the heroic past and the city's spiritual heritage.

Getting There

The memorial complex is located on Chelyuskintsev Square, which is part of the city's historical core. It is situated on Mira Boulevard and is very easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the city center during a stroll along the embankment or after visiting the local churches.

If you are staying in a more distant area, you can use public transport. Buses and trolleybuses going to the "Bogoyavlenskaya Square" or "Krasnaya Square" stops are suitable, from which you can take a pleasant short walk to the memorial. A taxi will also quickly take you to the address: 4 Chelyuskintsev St.

History & Facts

The grand opening of the Eternal Flame in Yaroslavl took place on October 29, 1968. This monument was the result of a collaboration between the prominent Soviet sculptor Lev Kerbel and architect Grigory Zakharov. Symbolically, the flame for the memorial was brought from Moscow — it was lit from the flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Kremlin wall.

The torch with a part of the Moscow flame was brought by Heroes of the Soviet Union — Army General Pavel Batov and Yuri Sirotkin. The opening of the monument was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Komsomol, emphasizing the continuity of generations and loyalty to historical memory.

A significant tradition began at the memorial in 1974: Yaroslavl schoolchildren stood in a guard of honor here for the first time. Since then, for decades, the city's best students have kept watch here at Post No. 1, maintaining a living link between times and generations.

Time Needed

To view the memorial and soak in its solemn atmosphere, visitors typically need about 20–30 minutes. This is enough time to unhurriedly examine the bas-reliefs on the granite walls and admire the opening view.

If your visit coincides with commemorative dates or the time of the guard of honor change, you might want to stay a little longer. The site invites quiet reflection and is an essential stop on any walking route through the city center.

Working Hours

The Eternal Flame memorial is open to the public 24 hours a day. You can come here at any time convenient for you to see the flame that never goes out, regardless of the weather or season.

According to the official schedule, the site is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Visiting in the evening or at night creates a special, mystical and solemn atmosphere due to the lighting and the bright contrast of the fire against the night sky.
