In the heart of the historical district, on a high bank where the city's recorded history once began, stands the Monument to the 800th Anniversary of Vologda. This majestic obelisk, made of light northern granite, was erected in 1959 on the site of the famous Lazy Square (Lenivaya Ploshchadka). According to legend, this is where Vologda was founded, eventually becoming one of the most important spiritual and commercial centers that Russia has given to the world.

The monument is a stele approximately 7 meters high, set on a massive square pedestal. Its architectural design harmoniously combines strict lines with the elegance of decorative elements. Each side of the base is adorned with niches in the shape of traditional Russian kokoshniks, inside which are hidden intricate bronze bas-reliefs telling the stories of significant eras in the city's life.
The obelisk is not just a commemorative sign, but a true starting point for every tourist. It serves as a reminder of Vologda's centuries-long journey from an ancient settlement to a modern cultural hub. Surrounded by a cozy square and a balustrade, the monument is one of the most recognizable and revered landmarks of the northern region.
