About

In the heart of the ancient city of Tver lies one of the most original and witty cultural spaces that Russia proudly features on its tourism map. The Museum of the Goat is a unique private collection dedicated to the multifaceted image of this animal in history, culture, and folklore. Founded in 2008 by professional historian Vladimir Lavrenov, the museum evolved from a whimsical idea into a serious educational and scientific platform.

The collection includes over 6,500 exhibits brought from forty countries. Here you can find everything from ancient coins and medieval coats of arms to modern toys and household items. The museum is divided into three thematic halls. In the first, guests learn about the goat as a phenomenon of world civilization; the second is entirely dedicated to the legendary "Tver goats"; and the third serves as a space for temporary exhibitions on heraldry and rare artifacts.

Archaeological finds, such as Roman figurines and Byzantine statuettes, as well as extremely rare items like Masonic mugs, are of particular value. This is a place where serious science meets kind humor, allowing visitors to take a fresh look at familiar symbols and learn why the goat became the unofficial but much-loved brand of the Tver region.

What to Do

The main reason to visit this place is the live interaction with history. We highly recommend taking a tour with a professional guide. They will tell you about the myths and legends associated with the image of the goat among different peoples, explain the etymology of the animal's name in different languages, and reveal the secrets of Tver's heraldic symbols.

Visitors can take a closer look at unique collections: from 16th-century Inca figurines to vintage beer mugs that were once even involved in court proceedings. Photography is allowed for lovers of unusual shots, so you can take many funny and educational photos against the backdrop of exhibits from all over the world.

The museum regularly holds educational programs, lectures, and thematic seminars that will be of interest to both adults and children. It is an excellent place for a family getaway, where you can learn a lot about ethnography and culture in a light and relaxed way. Be sure to check out the exhibition hall, which frequently features changing displays dedicated to the heraldry of Great Britain or Russian antiquities.

Getting There

Finding this unusual tourist site is easy, as it is located in the historical center of the city at: 5 Zhigareva St. If you are in the area of the Volga Embankment or the Tver Kremlin, a walk to the museum will take no more than 15–20 minutes through the picturesque streets.

For those who prefer public transport, any buses or fixed-route taxis heading to the "Zhigareva St." stop or toward the city center are suitable. From the Tver railway station, you can reach the museum by taxi or bus in about 15–20 minutes, covering a distance of about 10 km.

If you are traveling from Moscow, it is most convenient to take the high-speed "Lastochka" train or a regular electric train (travel time is about 2 hours) and then transfer to local transport. For motorists, the M10 and M11 federal highways are available, and parking spaces are provided near the museum.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in a very unusual way—with a newspaper joke in 2006 claiming that the city desperately needed such a museum. The idea was picked up by historian and heraldry expert Vladimir Ilyich Lavrenov. The very first exhibit, which laid the foundation for the collection, was a simple toy goat on wheels, purchased at a local market for just 50 rubles.

The museum officially opened its doors on October 4, 2008. Initially, it was located in the Litvinki microdistrict at a branch of the Russian State University for the Humanities, where it served as a training ground for students. Over time, the collection grew thanks to gifts from city residents and the founder's finds during numerous travels, leading to a move to a spacious building in the city center in 2014.

The choice of the main character is no coincidence: the goat was a symbol of Tver as early as the 14th century and was featured on the city's coat of arms before being replaced. The museum's creators decided to "restore historical justice" by gathering more than 6,500 artifacts from 40 countries under one roof. Today, you can see items here that are thousands of years old, starting with ancient coins from the 3rd century BC.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all three thematic halls and get acquainted with the most interesting exhibits, most visitors need between 1 and 2 hours. This is quite enough time to immerse yourself in the museum's atmosphere and take some memorable photos.

If you decide to use the services of a guide, the tour can take about an hour, after which there will be time for independent study of rare finds. The museum features a high concentration of small details and interesting facts, so history and heraldry enthusiasts may want to stay a little longer.
