History & Facts

The history of this amazing place began on October 30, 1879. That was when Ilya Ivanovich Bobrov, a merchant and honorary citizen of the city, laid out an estate park on the banks of the Tvertsa. In those days, elegant wooden galleries, a romantic rotunda gazebo, and a light arched bridge graced the grounds, creating the atmosphere of a classical Russian estate.

Interestingly, the land beneath the garden has even deeper historical roots. According to legend, the Otroch Uspensky Monastery was restored on this site in 1265, after having been ravaged during the Mongol-Tatar invasion. Centuries later, a fragment of the former monastery lands became the foundation for the modern botanical garden.

A new stage of development began in 1898 when the estate came under the management of Leonid Antonovich Kolakovsky. For thirty years, this natural history teacher carefully built the collection, planting trees according to the geographical principle. Thanks to his efforts, the garden gained the status of a serious scientific institution. In 1938, the territory officially became the botanical garden of the Pedagogical Institute (now TvGU).

In the post-war years, the garden's development was continued by renowned scientists A.A. Lebedev and M.L. Nevsky, who established the main core collections and built the greenhouse. Since 1997, the garden has been a recognized member of the Botanic Gardens Conservation International, and its doors officially opened to the general public in August 1996.

To leisurely explore all the displays, visit the greenhouse, and take beautiful photos against the backdrop of historical landscapes, visitors usually need about 1.5–2 hours. This is plenty of time to feel the park's peaceful atmosphere.
