Atop Ascension Mountain, offering a breathtaking view of the oldest district of Novokuznetsk, lies the "Kuznetsk Fortress" Museum-Reserve. This monumental structure, an outstanding example of Siberian fortification art, is one of the primary historical landmarks that Russia is proud of.

The fortress covers an area of approximately 21 hectares and includes not only restored defensive ramparts and bastions but also numerous archaeological sites. The combination of austere military architecture and natural beauty gives this place a unique atmosphere: very nearby, in the narrow canyon of the Vodopadny Creek, a real natural waterfall is hidden away.
Today, it is a modern museum complex where thousands of exhibits are housed in the restored Soldiers' Barracks and the Senior Officers' House. The museum's collection includes over 20,000 items, telling guests the fascinating history of the region—from ancient times to the era of the Kuznetsk Prison Castle.
