Pamyatnik Tramvayu

About

Strolling through the ancient cobbled streets that Vyborg is famous for, it's impossible to pass by this charming landmark. The Tram Monument is not just a static sculpture, but a masterfully recreated life-size streetcar from the early 20th century, which has become one of the city's most recognizable symbols in the modern history of Russia.

This bright yellow car with red outlines is an exact replica of the first motor tram from the Swedish-German company ASEA/AEG, which first hit the city's rails in 1912. Interestingly, the monument is made of durable ship steel and is set on authentic historical rails found during the reconstruction of the old depot.

The site embodies an entire era of urban transport that existed here for 45 years. Installed in 2018 in a cozy square, it instantly turned into a favorite photo zone and meeting place, serving as a reminder of the times when the ring of a tram bell was a common sound at Vyborg intersections.

What to Do

The main feature of this monument is its interactivity. It is not just an exhibit behind a fence: you can walk right up to the figure of the motorman in his historical uniform, who warmly greets passengers at the entrance, or take a photo with the stowaway boy, playfully perched on the coupling at the rear of the car.

Inside the tram car itself, there is now a miniature café. Stepping inside, you find yourself in the space that once housed seating and standing room for city residents at the beginning of the last century. Here you can order hot tea or coffee, have a snack of fresh pastries, and watch the modern city rhythm through the windows, imagining yourself as a time traveler.

For photography enthusiasts, this location offers plenty of opportunities. The combination of the bright metal of the tram, the bronze sculptures, and the surrounding historic buildings creates a beautiful backdrop for retro-style shots. It is an excellent point to slow down for a moment and soak in the atmosphere of old Vyborg.

Getting There

The monument is located in the heart of the historic center, in a cozy square at the intersection of Krepostnaya and Pionerskaya streets. This is a pedestrian-friendly area, so the walk to it from the city's main tourist trails will be easy and pleasant.

If you are traveling from Saint Petersburg, the most convenient way is to take the "Lastochka" high-speed train or a bus—the journey takes about two hours. From the Vyborg railway station, you can reach the monument on foot in about 10–15 minutes or take a local taxi, which is quite affordable here.

For those who prefer public transport within the city, many shuttle buses stop near Teatralnaya Square. However, the monument is located in an area where it is most enjoyable to move on foot while admiring the historic architecture.

History & Facts

The history of tram service in the city began on September 28, 1912. The first line connected the Papula district and the Abo Bridge, becoming a vital part of the urban infrastructure for nearly half a century. Trams were an integral part of the citizens' lives until the spring of 1957, when the service was finally discontinued.

The location for the monument was not chosen by chance: it was at this intersection in 1920 that the largest tram accident in the history of Finland (which the city was part of at the time) occurred. The installation of the memorial tram car became a tribute not only to technical progress but also to the dramatic pages of the city's past.

The modern monument was officially opened on August 3, 2018, in honor of the 725th anniversary of the city's founding. The car was recreated by the craftsmen of the Vyborg Shipyard. A particularly touching moment of the opening ceremony was the presence of N.I. Afanasyeva—one of the first female tram drivers who worked in the post-war period.

Time Needed

To inspect the tram car and the sculpture composition, 15–20 minutes is usually sufficient. This is enough time to examine the details and take atmospheric photos with the motorman and the "stowaway."

If you decide to step inside to have a cup of coffee and take a break from your walk, we recommend planning for about 45–60 minutes. It is an ideal spot for a short pause in the middle of a sightseeing day.

Working Hours

The monument itself and the sculpture composition are located outdoors and are available for viewing 24/7. In the evening, the site is illuminated, giving it a special charm.

The café located inside the tram operates on an individual schedule (usually from morning until evening). If your goal is specifically to visit the coffee shop, we recommend checking the current opening hours on-site or in local city guides.
