Weather Overview

The climate of Vyborg can be described as moderate continental, with a noticeable influence from the Baltic Sea, resulting in four distinct seasons. Winters here are typically cold, with average temperatures in January and February around -5°C. Snow days are frequent during this period, although the total precipitation volume remains low. Summer, especially July, is moderately warm, with an average temperature of about +18°C, creating comfortable conditions for walking and exploring the city's numerous attractions.

Spring and autumn in Vyborg are classic transitional seasons. In spring, starting from March, gradual warming occurs, while in autumn, from September, temperatures begin to drop, bringing more frequent precipitation, primarily in the form of rain. A characteristic feature of Vyborg's climate is that while the monthly precipitation amount is small (on average 1-3 mm), the number of days with precipitation can be quite high. This is particularly noticeable from November to January, which see 16-17 days with precipitation, as well as in August and October (about 14 days). This means that light waterproof clothing or an umbrella can be useful companions when travelling around Vyborg at any time of the year.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Vyborg is characterized by noticeable seasonal fluctuations, offering visitors completely different experiences depending on the time of year. The coldest period is traditionally January and February, when the average temperature holds around -5°C, and nightly lows can drop to -6.9°C in January and -7.2°C in February. Conversely, the warmest month is considered to be July with an average temperature of +18°C, when daily highs reach a comfortable +21.5°C, followed by August with an average temperature of +17.1°C.

The summer months in Vyborg – June, July, and August – offer pleasant warmth, ideal for long walks and exploring the city. Average daily temperatures during this period range from +16.1°C in June to +18.0°C in July. During the day, the air warms up on average to +20°C...+21.5°C, while nights remain relatively fresh, with temperatures around +12.2°C...+14.5°C. Winter brings steady frosts: from December to February, average temperatures are consistently below zero. In December, the average temperature is -2.8°C, dropping to -4.9°C in January and -5.0°C in February. During the day, the thermometer rarely rises above -1.1°C...-2.9°C in these months, and at night it drops to -4.4°C...-7.2°C, creating a true winter atmosphere.

Spring and autumn in Vyborg are classic transitional seasons with gradual temperature changes. In March, the breath of winter is still felt with an average temperature of -2.4°C, but by April it rises to +3.2°C, and in May it reaches a comfortable +10.0°C. In autumn, starting from September (average +12.4°C), a smooth cooling occurs: in October the average temperature is +6.4°C, and in November it drops to +1.6°C. It is interesting to note that the largest daily temperature fluctuations (the difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum) are observed in late spring and early summer; for example, in May the difference is about 8.7°C (from +5.7°C to +14.4°C), and in June – about 7.9°C. In winter and late autumn, these fluctuations are less pronounced, averaging 3-4.5°C.

Precipitation

Vyborg displays an interesting pattern of precipitation distribution throughout the year. There is no clearly defined rainy season or dry period where the monthly amount of precipitation changes drastically. The volume of precipitation remains small and fairly stable, varying from 1 mm to 3 mm per month. However, a key feature is the frequency of precipitation: even with a small volume, days with precipitation can be quite frequent, indicating a predominantly light and drizzling nature of rain or snowfall.

The winter period, from December to February, is characterized by the most frequent precipitation, mainly in the form of snow, given the average temperatures below zero. December leads in the number of days with precipitation (17 days), followed by January and November (16 days each). Despite the frequency, the volume of falling snow is usually small, amounting to 2-3 mm per month. March can also bring snow, but with a gradual transition to rain. The "driest" months in terms of precipitation volume are April and May, when only 1 mm falls. These spring months also see the fewest number of days with precipitation – about 10.

In summer, precipitation falls as rain. June continues the trend of spring with 10 rainy days, but in July and August, their number increases slightly to 13-14 days. August, along with October and December, belongs to the months with the maximum precipitation volume for Vyborg – 3 mm. In autumn, the frequency of rain increases again, especially in October (14 days) and November (16 days). November precipitation can be mixed, gradually turning into snow by the end of the month. Thus, although the difference in the total amount of precipitation between months is small, when planning a trip, it is worth considering specifically the frequency of its occurrence.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Vyborg, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly to feel comfortable in any weather. Given the changeable climate with frequent, albeit not heavy precipitation, as well as windy weather, especially in the off-season, the key principle is layering. Regardless of the season, comfortable waterproof shoes for long walks on cobblestones will be your best companion. In winter (from December to February), when average temperatures drop to -5°C and below, be sure to take warm outerwear (a down jacket or parka), a hat, a scarf, gloves, and thermal underwear. The waterproof and windproof properties of your jacket will be especially relevant due to frequent snowfall and potential wind.

In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather in Vyborg can be quite unpredictable. It can be cool in the morning, and sunny and warmer during the day. Therefore, the ideal solution is clothing that is easy to combine: sweaters or fleece jackets, long-sleeved t-shirts, jeans, or thick trousers. Be sure to bring a waterproof jacket or raincoat, as well as an umbrella, since the number of days with precipitation during these periods is quite high, especially in October and November. In summer (June-August), the weather is usually warm, with an average temperature of about +16°C to +18°C. You will need light t-shirts, shorts, dresses, or skirts. However, evenings can be cool, so a light jacket, cardigan, or sweater will not go amiss. Do not forget sunscreen and a hat for sunny days, as well as a light windbreaker or raincoat in case of summer rains, which are also not uncommon, especially in July and August.
