Getting There: Introduction
By Plane
The most reliable and fastest way to reach the regional capital is by air. The city is served by the international Yakutsk Airport (YKS), which receives flights from many major cities in the country and handles the main passenger flow. The airport is located within the city limits, making the transfer to the centre quick and convenient.
As an alternative or backup airfield for small aviation, the airport in the settlement of Magan, located just 13 km away, is often used. For those planning complex connecting routes across the republic, the city of Vilyuysk, which has its own air connections, can also be an important aviation hub.

By Train
Rail connections to the city of Yakutsk have their own geographical peculiarities: the railway tracks only reach the right bank of the Lena River, to the station of Nizhny Bestyakh. There is no railway station in the city itself, as a bridge across the wide river has not yet been built.
Upon the train's arrival, tourists need to cross the river to get to the city. In summer, the crossing is made by ferry or boat; in winter, via an ice road; and during the transition seasons, by hovercraft. Please factor in this transfer time when planning your journey.

By Bus
At present, direct bus services from the central regions of the country to Yakutsk are practically non-existent due to the vast distances. The main bus service is developed within the republic and connects the capital with nearby districts.
If you are in neighbouring settlements, please check the schedule with local carriers. Intercity buses often depart from the bus station, but their schedule depends heavily on road conditions and the seasonality of river crossings.
By Car
Travelling by car to this region is a challenge for experienced drivers. The shortest and simplest route runs from the settlement of Magan: the distance is only about 22 km, and the journey will take approximately 30–40 minutes on an asphalt road.
A much more serious journey awaits those driving from the direction of the city of Vilyuysk. You will have to cover 575 km, which will take about 8 hours, although the time may increase significantly depending on weather conditions. In winter, traffic moves along "zimniks"—specially equipped ice roads.
Tips for Travellers
Visiting the largest city situated on permafrost requires careful preparation so that the harsh climate does not spoil your impressions of the trip.
- Seasonal clothing. In winter (down to -50°C), layering is mandatory: thermal underwear, wool, a down jacket, fur boots, or very warm footwear. In summer, it can be hot here (up to +30°C), so pack light clothing.
- Transport. Taxi apps (such as inDriver) are popular in the city, which is often more convenient than public transport, especially in severe frost.
- Cash. Supermarkets and restaurants accept cards, but for visiting markets (such as the Farmers' Market) or trips to rural districts, it is better to have a supply of cash in rubles.
- Health and skin care. In winter, use a rich, oily cream to prevent frostbite (apply 30 minutes before going outside). In summer, be sure to carry strong insect repellents for mosquitoes and midges.
- Communication and language. Russian is the primary language, and Yakut is also widely spoken. Tourists usually do not face communication problems.
- Local traditions. Respect local customs: do not leave litter in nature and treat sacred places (serge hitching posts) with reverence.
- What to avoid. Do not attempt long walks in extreme cold without special gear, and avoid walking into fog (ice fog reduces visibility on roads).
- Gastronomy. Be sure to try stroganina (frozen raw fish) and foal meat—these are the main delicacies of the local cuisine.
By following these tips, you can safely and comfortably immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of the North.
