In the very heart of the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk lies the majestic Glory Square (Ploshchad Slavy)—the region's primary memorial complex dedicated to the heroism of Soviet soldiers. This landmark in Russia serves as a reminder of the heroic events of August 1945, when South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands were liberated during fierce battles.
The central focal point of the complex is a grand 27-meter obelisk and a five-meter bronze sculpture of a soldier standing in a guard of honor. Nearby is a podium with the Eternal Flame, where fresh flowers are always laid. The architectural ensemble is complemented by expressive figures of sailors and steles bearing the names of those who gave their lives for their Motherland.

Strolling through the grounds, visitors can see the Alley of Glory featuring fourteen granite busts of Heroes of the Soviet Union. The upper part of the complex is decorated with a monument to Marshal A.M. Vasilevsky and an impressive open-air exhibition of military equipment, showcasing tanks and artillery pieces. This cultural heritage site carries a special atmosphere of solemnity and is recognized as one of the city's most visited attractions.
