On the rugged and picturesque coast of Hokkaido, in the city of Mombetsu, lies a remarkable place—the Okhotsk Tokkari Center. This is a unique facility for a country like Japan, as it is entirely dedicated to the protection, rehabilitation, and breeding of seals. Also known as Seal Land, the center has become a true sanctuary for the inhabitants of the northern waters of the Sea of Okhotsk.

The center plays a vital role in marine fauna conservation: injured or weakened animals found on the shore are brought here. After treatment and recovery, many of them are released back into their natural habitat. Visitors can meet two main species of local inhabitants: spotted seals (largha) and ringed seals, which traditionally appear off the coast of Hokkaido with the arrival of the winter drift ice.
The Okhotsk Tokkari Center is more than just a zoo; it is an educational and scientific platform where you can learn about the lives of marine mammals and the ecological features of the region. The atmosphere of animal care and the chance to see these charming creatures up close make this one of the most heartwarming attractions in northern Japan.
