Shopping in Zelenogorsk is more of a pleasant addition to a resort holiday than a goal in itself. The city is not famous for large shopping centers or exclusive boutiques; however, you will be able to find everything necessary for a comfortable stay, as well as purchase lovely souvenirs to remember your trip. The main focus is on goods for vacationers, local products, and small shops with a diverse range.
The main shopping artery of Zelenogorsk is undoubtedly Lenin Avenue. Most shops are concentrated along it: grocery supermarkets, pharmacies, small clothing and shoe stores, household goods, as well as souvenir shops. Separate small shops and kiosks can also be found near Golden Beach and at the entrance to Zelenogorsk Park of Culture and Leisure, where beach accessories, drinks, and ice cream are often sold.
You likely won't find large modern shopping and entertainment complexes common to residents of megacities in Zelenogorsk. Shopping here is mainly represented by convenience stores, small department stores, and specialized shops. However, this is quite sufficient for meeting daily needs and buying small gifts. In some parts of the city, there may be small shopping houses or pavilions with a variety of goods.
Markets in Zelenogorsk are mostly seasonal. In summer and early autumn, you can find small stalls or stands where local residents sell fresh vegetables, fruits, berries, and mushrooms gathered from the surrounding forests. Sometimes seasonal fairs are held in the city, where you can buy farm products, honey, and handmade items. There are no specialized large markets, such as flea markets or permanent souvenir markets, in the city, but individual souvenir rows may appear in the busiest tourist spots.
As souvenirs from Zelenogorsk, tourists usually bring back items related to its resort nature and the environment of the Karelian Isthmus. These can be items with a nautical theme, small paintings or photos with views of the Gulf of Finland, or crafts made of wood or birch bark. Traditional Russian souvenirs are also popular: nesting dolls (matryoshkas), shawls, and items with Khokhloma or Gzhel painting. Given the proximity to Saint Petersburg, you can also find amber products. Don't forget about local treats—for example, products from local bakeries or seasonal berries.
Shops in Zelenogorsk usually operate on a schedule standard for Russia: most open around 10:00 and close at 19:00 or 20:00. Grocery stores and supermarkets may have longer working hours, including weekends. The main method of payment is the Russian ruble (RUB). Cash and bank cards of the Russian "Mir" payment system are accepted. Please note that international Visa and Mastercard cards issued outside of Russia currently do not function in the country. ATMs for withdrawing cash from "Mir" cards are available in the city.
The possibility of a tax refund (Tax Free) for foreign tourists theoretically exists in Russia in stores participating in this system. However, in a small resort town like Zelenogorsk, finding such points of sale might be difficult. Typically, the Tax Free system is more common in large cities and big department stores. If you are planning large purchases and count on a tax refund, it is better to clarify this possibility directly in the store before making a purchase.
