The Botanical Garden in Puerto de la Cruz, officially known as the La Orotava Acclimatization Garden (Jardín de Aclimatación de la Orotava), is a true historical and natural monument in northern Tenerife. Founded by decree of King Charles III in 1788, it is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Spain. Initially, its purpose was to acclimatize exotic plants brought from New World colonies before they were sent to the royal gardens in Madrid. Thanks to the island's unique mild climate, the garden became an ideal place for this purpose.
Despite its relatively small area, the garden impresses with an incredible variety of flora. It houses a vast collection of tropical and subtropical plants from around the world, including rare and valuable species that are hard to find in other parts of Europe. Visitors can stroll among giant ficus trees with aerial roots, all kinds of palm varieties, coffee and tulip trees, and see a pond with lilies and turtles. It is a place where some paths create the complete sensation of walking through a real jungle.
