From this point, a breathtaking view opens up over the city of Santa Cruz de la Palma, its bustling port, and the endless reaches of the ocean. The main highlight of the location is the view of La Caldereta — a perfectly preserved crater of an ancient volcano. The contrast between the rugged volcanic forms, emerald greenery, and the bright rooftops of houses inside the crater creates a truly unique picture.

Next to the viewpoint is a cozy 18th-century church — Ermita de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción, which adds a touch of historical charm to the place. On a clear day, you can even spot the distant silhouette of Teide peak on the neighboring island of Tenerife, making a visit to the mirador an unforgettable experience for every traveler.

What to Do

At Mirador La Concepción, the primary activity is undoubtedly contemplation. Visitors come here to capture panoramic shots of Santa Cruz de la Palma and the port, where snow-white liners are often docked. A particularly magical atmosphere reigns here during the pre-sunset hours, when shadows fall into the bowl of the La Caldereta crater and the sky is painted in incredible colors.

In addition to admiring the views, it is definitely worth stepping into the small church of Ermita de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción. Its modest but elegant 18th-century architecture provides a sense of peace and coolness. This place is traditionally considered a site of power and pilgrimage for locals, and visiting it will allow you to touch the living history of the island.

For those who enjoy active recreation, a visit to the platform can be part of a hiking route. Trails nearby lead to interesting spots, such as the old Dornajo market or the small Maroparque zoo. And as darkness falls, the mirador turns into an ideal spot for astrotourism: La Palma's clear skies allow you to see the Milky Way and myriads of stars without city light pollution.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach the viewpoint is by car. From the center of Santa Cruz de la Palma, follow the LP-101 road toward the village of Miraflores. The route follows a winding but very scenic serpentine road, and signs will help you ensure you don't miss the turnoff to the mirador.

If you prefer public transport, take bus line 300, which runs between Santa Cruz and Los Llanos. You need to get off at the stop by the old airport (Aeropuerto Viejo), from where it is about a 500-meter walk downhill. The viewpoint will come into sight almost immediately, so it's hard to get lost.

For the most resilient travelers, there is the option of a hike directly from the city. This is quite a steep climb that requires physical effort, but in return, you'll enjoy changing perspectives of the coastline throughout the journey. Alternatively, you can always use a local taxi; the trip from the city center takes only 10–15 minutes.

History & Facts

Mirador de La Concepción earned its name due to its proximity to the church of the same name — Ermita de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción. This shrine was built in the 18th century and has remained an important site of pilgrimage and spiritual life for residents of the surrounding settlements for centuries, giving the natural landscape a sacred significance.

The geological history of this location is even more ancient. The viewpoint is situated on the edge of La Caldereta — a crater formed by a powerful volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. Today, this crater is a vivid example of how people adapt to volcanic terrain: houses have been built and gardens planted inside it, making it one of the island's most unusual residential areas.

An interesting stage in the development of this area occurred in 1917, when the first tunnel was cut here. It connected the island's capital with the southern regions, turning the mirador area into a kind of "gateway" to the city. The island of La Palma itself has a rich history that began for Europeans in the late 15th century with the conquest led by Alonso Fernández de Lugo, and this mirador is an excellent vantage point to see how the city has grown and changed since those colonial times.

Time Needed

To simply enjoy the panoramic views and take commemorative photos, 30–40 minutes is enough for most visitors. This time is sufficient to see the city from a bird's eye view and look into the bowl of the volcanic crater.

If you plan to visit the historic Ermita de La Concepción church, take a leisurely stroll around the area, or wait for the sunset, we recommend allowing about 1–1.5 hours for your visit. The evening hours are especially prized by photographers, as the setting sun paints the ocean and mountain slopes in golden tones.
