In the heart of Sri Lanka's largest metropolis — the majestic Colombo — lies the Independence Memorial Museum. This landmark historical site was built to commemorate the country's independence in 1948. The main structure is an open gallery featuring a red-tiled roof and 60 carved stone columns, inspired by the traditional architectural style of the audience halls of the ancient kings of Kandy.
The museum itself is located in the basement of this impressive architectural complex. Surrounded by the greenery of the prestigious Cinnamon Gardens district, it is the centerpiece of Independence Square. The complex serves not only as a repository of history but also as a national symbol of freedom, where the most significant state ceremonies are held.
Inside the museum, guests can explore the chronicle of the nation's formation, covering the periods of Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. The exhibition includes busts of political leaders, artifacts from the independence movement, collections of antique weaponry, and rare books that help visitors understand how modern Sri Lanka — the "Resplendent Land" — was born.
