What to Do

The main experience that draws thousands of tourists here is the chance to see the legendary Ella Train Journey. Watching colonial-era vintage trains slowly pass over viaducts and through tunnels is the perfect moment for Instagrammable shots. Trains often make brief stops, allowing travelers to capture the aesthetics of the old railway.

Be sure to take a stroll to the nearby tea fields. Here you can observe local tea pluckers at work and even head down to the scenic Laxapana Falls or visit the historic Christ Church Warleigh. To get around between locations easily, you can rent a colorful tuk-tuk.

After your walk, it's lovely to stop by one of the local bungalows, like the Tea Hills Bungalow, to enjoy a cup of fresh Ceylon tea while admiring the green hills. A visit here is often combined with a trip to the Nine Arch Bridge to get a full picture of the region's engineering heritage.

Getting There

The most convenient way to reach this scenic spot is by train from Colombo, Kandy, or Ella. The mountain railway journey is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. A ticket for a seated carriage costs around 2000 LKR, with both VIP seats and observation cars available for the best views.

The nearest major station is in Hatton itself. From there, the junction is just a 5–10 minute tuk-tuk or taxi ride away (use the address VHXR+6XH). If you prefer buses, regular services run from Kandy toward Hatton, after which you can use local transport.

Many tourists prefer visiting Malliappuwa Junction as part of an organized tour. Guides often include this location in Central Province itineraries, combining it with visits to waterfalls and endless tea plantations.

History & Facts

The railway network in the Hatton area was established during the colonial era. Its primary purpose was to connect the highland tea plantations with ports for export. The history of this location is inextricably linked to the birth of Sri Lanka's tea industry in 1824.

Interestingly, the famous Nine Arch Bridge, located nearby and part of the same line, began construction in 1921. Due to a steel shortage following World War I, engineers made a unique decision — to build the structure entirely from stone and brick, without using any metal. The first trains passed through here in 1929.

The junction itself and the adjacent tracks represent a monument to 19th and 20th-century engineering. Stone viaducts reaching up to 25 meters high still serve transport purposes today, demonstrating the incredible durability and craftsmanship of the builders of that time.

Time Needed

A quick visit to the junction itself and for taking commemorative photos usually takes 1 to 2 hours. Most of the time is spent waiting for a passing train and strolling along the platform, which offers breathtaking views of the terraces.

If you plan to combine your visit with a trip to the Nine Arch Bridge or a walk through the nearby tea plantations, you should allow at least 3–4 hours. This will let you enjoy nature without rushing and perhaps stop by a local bungalow for a cup of fresh tea.

Working Hours

The site is accessible 24/7, every day from Monday to Sunday. As it is part of the active transport infrastructure, there are no closed gates or ticket counters to enter the junction area itself.

However, we recommend checking the train schedule in advance on the official railway website so your visit coincides with the passing of the famous trains — this is when the location truly comes to life and becomes most photogenic.
