Asgiri Maha Vihara pirivena

About

On the scenic hills of the city of Kandy lies one of the most significant Buddhist shrines that Sri Lanka has given the world — the majestic Asgiri Maha Vihara monastery. This centuries-old complex is not just a historical monument but an active spiritual center and the headquarters of one of the most influential Buddhist orders. It is here, together with the Malwathu Monastery, that crucial decisions regarding the guardianship of the priceless relic — the Tooth of the Buddha — are made.

The architectural ensemble of the monastery includes several unique structures, most notably the "Old Temple," "Middle Temple," and the impressive "New Temple." One of the highlights of the complex is the monumental 36-foot reclining Buddha statue, skillfully carved directly into the rock. The tranquility of the courtyards and the elegant austerity of the assembly halls create an atmosphere of deep peace, far removed from the city's hustle and bustle.

Beyond its religious role, the monastery functions as an educational institution (pirivena), where young monks study ancient teachings. For travelers, this site is interesting not only for its architecture and shrines but also for the magnificent panoramic views of Kandy and its surroundings that open up from the elevation where the monastery stands.

What to Do

A visit to Asgiri Maha Vihara is primarily an opportunity to connect with the living tradition of Buddhism. Be sure to look into the prayer halls, whose walls are decorated with magnificent frescoes. These murals, meticulously updated during restoration, are strikingly vibrant: scenes from the lives of deities, historical narratives, and important Buddhist parables come to life on them. The fine craftsmanship allows you to observe every detail of the characters' robes and gestures, turning a temple tour into a walk through an art gallery.

Photography enthusiasts should head higher up the slope of the monastery hill. From here, you’ll find a breathtaking view of Kandy’s tiled roofs, the calm surface of the central lake, and the emerald hills surrounding the city. It is the perfect vantage point to appreciate the scale of the ancient capital and take memorable photos in the glow of the setting sun.

While strolling through the grounds, you can observe the daily life of the monks and pirivena students. An atmosphere of focus and peace prevails here, perfect for meditation or simple quiet contemplation. Visiting the snow-white stupa and seeing the rock-carved Buddha statue will be a great addition to your itinerary, allowing you to feel the true spiritual power of this sacred site.

Getting There

The Asgiri Maha Vihara monastery complex is located in the northern part of Kandy, just a couple of kilometers from the city center and the famous lake. If you are staying in the central areas, you can reach it on foot — the walk takes about 15–20 minutes, though keep in mind that the road goes uphill.

The most popular and convenient way to get around the city is by tuk-tuk. Local drivers know the way to the monastery well, and a ride from the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic or the railway station is inexpensive and takes no more than 5–10 minutes. You can also use taxi services or ride-hailing apps.

For those arriving from Colombo, you must first reach Kandy by train or intercity bus (a 3–4 hour journey). From the city's main transport hub, you can transfer to a local bus heading toward the northern hills, though a tuk-tuk remains the most comfortable option for travelers.

History & Facts

The history of this sacred site began in the 14th century when, by decree of King Parakramabahu IV, Commander Siriwardhana founded a residence for monks. The name "Asgiri" has a curious origin: it traces back to the word "Walasgala" (Bear Rock) — the name of the place in Yapahuwa from which the monastery's first inhabitants arrived. Over time, the pronunciation evolved into its modern form.

Over the centuries, the complex expanded thanks to the patronage of Sinhalese rulers. For example, the "Middle Temple" (Meda Pansala) was built in 1767, while the "New Temple" appeared shortly after in 1768. The Meda Maluwa area holds special significance, as it was historically used as a cremation site for members of the Kandy royal family, giving the monastery the status of an important historical necropolis.

Today, Asgiri Maha Vihara remains a stronghold of the Siyam Nikaya tradition. Since 1753, the High Abbots (Mahanayaka Thero), who play a key role in the country's religious and social life, have been appointed here. The monastery not only preserves ancient relics but also continues a centuries-old tradition of Buddhist education at its famous school — the pirivena.

Time Needed

A calm and thoughtful exploration of the entire Asgiri Maha Vihara grounds usually takes about 1 to 2 hours. This is enough time to visit the main temple buildings, examine the unique frescoes, and enjoy the peace in the monastery’s shaded courtyards.

If you are visiting as part of a city sightseeing tour, the visit might take around 45–60 minutes. However, if you plan to climb to the top of the hill for the panoramic views or wish to dedicate time to meditation, it is worth scheduling a bit more time so you don't have to rush and can fully experience the tranquil atmosphere of this place.
