Minneriya National Park is an iconic nature reserve in Sri Lanka, often associated with the cultural capital Kandy as one of the region's key natural attractions. It draws travelers from all over the world with its pristine beauty and the unique opportunity to observe wild animals in their natural environment.

The park covers an impressive area of about 9,000 hectares and includes diverse ecosystems: from dense forests and savannas to extensive wetlands. The central feature of the landscape is the ancient Minneriya reservoir, surrounded by vast grasslands that attract numerous animals, especially during the dry season.
Despite its relatively compact size, Minneriya is famous for its incredible wealth of fauna. The park is world-renowned as one of the best places to observe Asian elephants, particularly during the famous 'Gathering' (The Gathering), when hundreds of elephants congregate by the reservoir. Besides elephants, the park is home to deer, wild buffalo, monkeys (including the endemic purple-faced langur of Sri Lanka), as well as many bird species, including raptors like eagles and owls, and colorful peacocks. Iguanas and crocodiles can also be spotted.
