What to Do

Visiting Murberget is, above all, an opportunity to touch the living past. You can step inside old peasant houses and manors to see authentic interiors, tools, and everyday items. During the summer season, the grounds come alive: demonstrations of traditional crafts, such as blacksmithing or weaving, are held, where masters share the secrets of their ancestors.

Inside the museum's main building, be sure to visit the historical exhibition that tells the story of the region's development since ancient times. For art lovers, temporary galleries open regularly. Children will be delighted by the interactive zones, where history is presented in a playful way, and photography enthusiasts will find many picturesque angles against the backdrop of old facades and seascapes.

After an eventful walk, it’s nice to relax in the local cafe, which serves traditional Swedish dishes, or purchase unique handmade souvenirs at the museum shop. Throughout the year, the museum also hosts folklore festivals and fairs that allow for complete immersion in Scandinavian traditions.

Getting There

The museum complex is located on a hill about 2–3 kilometers from the city center. If you prefer walking, the journey from the main square will take about 20–30 minutes, allowing you to enjoy the views of the northern city along the way.

For those choosing public transport, buses No. 1 and No. 2 run regularly from the Härnösands resecentrum station. You need to get off at the "Murberget" stop; the ride takes only 5–10 minutes. A taxi ride from the center will cost approximately 100 Swedish kronor.

Travelers by car can easily find the complex at Murbergsvägen 31. Free parking is available at the museum entrance. If you are coming from neighboring regions via the E4 highway, follow the signs for Härnösand, after which the road to Murberget Hill will be easy to find.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in the early 20th century, during a time when interest in preserving national cultural heritage was growing rapidly in Sweden. The Murberget Local History Museum was conceived as a northern counterpart to Stockholm’s famous Skansen, designed to capture the vanishing lifestyle of peasants and craftsmen before industrialization forever changed the face of the region.

The main museum building opened its doors to visitors in 1929. Since then, the collection has been continuously expanded with unique buildings transported from various parts of Västernorrland County. Each structure — from a modest hut to a majestic church — was carefully dismantled and reassembled on Murberget Hill, preserving its historical authenticity.

Today, the complex is officially named the Västernorrlands museum. It serves not only as a repository for artifacts but also as an important research center studying the archaeology and ethnography of northern lands. Here, you can trace the region's development, from the harsh Viking Age to the economic prosperity of the Härnösand port in the 17th–19th centuries.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all corners of this large-scale complex, we recommend setting aside at least 2–3 hours. This is enough time to stroll between the historical open-air buildings and look into the modern exhibition halls of the main building.

If you are traveling with family or plan to study the exhibits in detail and linger in the cozy local cafe, it is better to budget about 4 hours for your visit. The museum grounds are perfect for long walks, especially during the warmer months when the craft workshops come to life.

When planning your itinerary, please note that the museum welcomes guests throughout the week, except for Mondays. This is a standard schedule for many cultural institutions in the region, allowing for the maintenance of the exhibits.
