Located on the central Stortorget square, this church was designed by the renowned architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. Built from Gotland limestone, the cross-shaped building impresses with its strict proportions, two massive towers, and a copper roof that has acquired a noble patina over time. Inside the cathedral, in the city of Kalmar, pilgrims and tourists can see a magnificent apse with an altar decorated with a scene of the Descent from the Cross.
Although the cathedral functions today as the main Lutheran parish church, it has retained its historical title of "Cathedral." This site combines the liturgical traditions of past centuries with the craftsmanship of stonemasons who created unique brick vaults and elegant portals that have become the city's hallmark.

History & Facts
The history of this grand structure began in 1660. Architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder used the famous Church of the Gesù in Rome as a model, striving to create a building in the center of the new city that embodied Renaissance ideals. The cathedral was built as an architectural centerpiece, located directly opposite the town hall on the main square of Kvarnholmen island.
The construction process dragged on for decades due to regional conflicts and a lack of funds. One of the most serious obstacles was the Scanian War (1675–1679), during which work almost completely stopped. As a result, the official consecration of the cathedral took place in 1700, and all finishing work was only completed in 1703.
Over the centuries, the cathedral has endured many trials, including a major fire in 1800 that caused serious damage. In the 19th and 20th centuries, large-scale restorations were carried out under the guidance of masters such as Helgo Zettervall and Joseph Fredrik Olson. The latest comprehensive restoration of the facades and interior was completed in 2011, returning the church to its historical grandeur and modernizing the interior space for the needs of the congregation.
