About

Imagine a place where time seems to slow down, offering a glimpse into the past of an entire region. Kulturen Museum is a unique open-air cultural and historical complex located in the heart of Lund. Founded in 1882, it is the second-oldest museum of its kind in Sweden and is rightfully considered one of Scandinavia's most atmospheric locations.

The museum spans two city blocks and features over 30 historic buildings. Here you can see everything from rugged medieval structures to cozy cottages from the 1930s. Each building is a small time capsule, reflecting the daily lives of nobles, townspeople, and simple peasants from the Skåne province. The museum's collection is impressive in scale, boasting over 2 million exhibits, including archaeological finds, traditional jewelry, and antique furniture.

What makes Kulturen special is the harmonious blend of architecture and nature. Authentic gardens and vegetable patches planted around the houses recreate the cultural landscape of past centuries. It is not just a museum, but a living space where the history of Lund and the southern Swedish lands comes to life through detailed interiors and fragments of ancient churches.

What to Do

A walk through the museum grounds feels like traveling in a time machine. You are free to wander the cobblestone streets, peeking into the open doors of historic houses. Inside, authentic interiors await: from the humble furnishings of a peasant farm to the refined decor of a burgher's house. Be sure to look for the collection of folk costumes and the famous Skåne jewelry—considered some of the most beautiful in Sweden.

Interactive exhibitions dedicated to the history of games, medieval Lund, and Swedish folklore are held regularly in the main building. For those who want more than just to look, there are craft workshops. Here you can watch blacksmiths, potters, or weavers at work, and sometimes even participate in creating a souvenir using ancient techniques.

For families with children, Kulturen offers special play areas and quests that turn learning history into an exciting adventure. In the summer, the museum gardens often host demonstrations of old crafts and folklore performances, making the visit even more memorable.

Getting There

The museum is located in the very heart of the city, just a few steps from the famous Lund Cathedral. If you are coming from Malmö, the train ride takes only about 15–20 minutes, while a drive via the E22 highway takes about 25 minutes. From Lund Centralstation, it's a leisurely 10–15 minute walk to the museum entrance, allowing you to soak in the atmosphere of the ancient streets.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses No. 1, 3, 5, and 6 stop right at Tegnérsplatsen. If you are traveling from Copenhagen Airport (CPH), it is most convenient to take a direct train to Hyllie station and then transfer to a train to Lund—the entire journey takes just over an hour.

Lund is a city of cyclists, so renting a bike right at the station is a great option. For car travelers, there are city parking lots near the museum, although spaces in the historic center may be limited.

History & Facts

The history of this unique place is inextricably linked with the name of local historian Georg Karlin, who founded the museum in 1882. During the era of rapid urbanization in the late 19th century, Karlin sought to preserve the vanishing way of life of patriarchal Southern Sweden at all costs. He began collecting not just interior items, but entire buildings, tools, and clothing, literally saving them from oblivion.

Since 1892, the exhibition has been established at its current location near the cathedral. The first exhibit was a nobleman's house, which was later joined by a peasant farm, a burgher's house, and even an ancient church. Karlin led his creation until 1933, turning it into one of the region's richest treasuries of artifacts.

Interestingly, many archaeological finds entered the museum collection by pure chance: for example, in the 1890s, many valuable items were found during a routine upgrade of the city's sewer system. Today, the museum fund holds more than 2 million exhibits, covering the period from the Stone Age to the present day.

Time Needed

To fully explore the riches of this site, we recommend allowing at least 3–4 hours for your visit. This is enough time to stroll through the open-air area without rushing, peek into the historic buildings, and enjoy the peace of the authentic gardens.

Typically, visitors spend about two hours touring the outdoor exhibits and another hour to an hour and a half on the thematic exhibitions in the main museum building. If you plan to attend traditional craft workshops or are traveling with children, your stay may extend to half a day.
