The cemetery was significantly expanded in 1873 when the city began dismantling old fortifications, including Fort Leopold, built back in the mid-18th century. When city authorities decided to transform this place into the Grabowo Gardens at the beginning of the 20th century, most of the tombstones were removed, preserving only monuments to the city's most prominent residents.

The park received its current name in honor of Stefan Żeromski — a prominent Polish writer and playwright. In the 1970s, the park's architectural appearance was complemented by modern elements: a monument to the writer and several expressive sculptures were installed, which are now considered an integral part of Szczecin's cultural landscape.
