Springeren - Maritime Experience Centre

About

The Springeren Maritime Center invites you to dive into the exciting world of seafaring — a unique museum and entertainment complex sprawling across 15,000 m² on the banks of the Limfjord. Located in Aalborg, this center has become a true monument to the maritime glory that Denmark so carefully preserves.

The main treasure of the collection is the 53-meter submarine Springeren. This was the last submarine entirely created by Danish engineers, and today anyone can step inside to experience the atmosphere of underwater service. In addition to the sub, the museum features over 600 detailed ship models, including the legendary Titanic and Carpathia, as well as the Søbjørnen, the fastest torpedo boat of its time.

The center harmoniously combines educational exhibits with play areas. Here, you can see royal boats and a 1:10 scale miniature copy of old Aalborg. For family vacations, there are spacious outdoor areas and LEGO rooms, making Springeren a place where history comes to life in an interactive format.

What to Do

The main adventure here begins by stepping aboard a real submarine. You can explore its narrow corridors, study the layout of the compartments, and look through the periscope yourself to see a submariner's view of the Limfjord panorama. Equally impressive is a visit to the torpedo boat Søbjørnen and an inspection of the elegant royal boats, which still retain their former splendor.

For those who love active participation, the center offers modern interactive entertainment. You can test your skills as a captain on a ship simulator, maneuvering through the waters of the fjord, or play the computer game Farligt Farvand. Remote-controlled model ship competitions are regularly held in a special pool, and in the museum halls, you can study the operation of a decompression chamber and learn the secrets of Danish shipyards.

A full program awaits young visitors: from pirate treasure hunts to creative hours in the LEGO zone. Outside, there is a large maritime-themed playground and a charming mini-city with 19th-century style houses. After all the activities, stop by the gift shop, which offers a wide selection of themed gifts — from maritime knots to complex ship model kits.

History & Facts

The center's history began in 1986, when the idea arose to preserve a unique vessel for future generations. Springeren is a DELFINEN-class submarine, which was the last submarine entirely designed and built in Denmark. In 1990, it arrived in Aalborg, becoming the foundation for the future museum.

The grand opening of the site, then called the Aalborg Søfarts- og Marinemuseum, took place on May 24, 1992. The ceremony was attended by members of the Royal Family, including the Queen and Prince Consort Henrik. Since then, the collection has been constantly enriched with navigational instruments, radio equipment, and valuable artifacts donated by the port and private collectors.

In 2011, the museum faced a serious challenge — a major fire that damaged a significant part of the exhibits, including rare equipment from Greenland. However, thanks to the efforts of volunteers and support from the city, the center was restored. In August 2012, it reopened its doors to visitors under its current name — Springeren Maritime Center.

Time Needed

To fully immerse yourself in the maritime atmosphere and explore all the interactive zones, visitors are recommended to set aside 3 to 5 hours for their visit. This is enough time to explore all the submarine compartments without rushing, try out the simulators, and walk around the outdoor area.

If you are planning a visit with children, it is better to aim for half a day. The interactive games, LEGO zones, and the extensive outdoor playground with a miniature city can keep young travelers engaged for a long time, while the option to have an outdoor picnic makes the experience even more relaxed and enjoyable.
