What to Do

At this zoo, everyone will find something to their liking: from watching polar bears gracefully dive for salmon in their innovative pool to walking through the authentic "African Village". Here, you feel as if you've been transported to the savannah, where giraffes, zebras, and antelopes roam nearby. Be sure to check out the tiger and lion enclosures, whose territories are designed to ensure animal comfort and provide visitors with an excellent view.

For those looking for interactivity, there are special zones where you can get a closer look at some of the inhabitants or watch educational shows on the ZoofariScene stage. Children will love the huge playground, while adults will appreciate the cozy rest areas. In winter, the park is transformed by the "Christmas at the Zoo" event, when the territory glows with thousands of lights, creating a true Scandinavian fairy tale.

Don't forget to visit the pavilions with orangutans and gorillas, as well as the penguinarium, home to charming emperor penguins. Well-thought-out routes allow you to see animal feedings and learn many amazing facts from the staff, making the walk not only pleasant but also very educational.

Getting There

Getting to this amazing place is easy, as it is located just 4 kilometers from the city center. If you prefer public transport, buses No. 1, 2, 4, and 28 run regularly from Aalborg Station. You need the stop called "Aalborg Zoo," which is right at the entrance.

For those traveling by car, the trip from the center takes about 10 minutes. Parking is available near the facility. Additionally, in good weather, a bike ride is an excellent option — the city has a well-developed network of bike paths, and the journey from the central districts will take no more than 15–20 minutes.

You can also use local taxi services, which is convenient if you are traveling in a large group or with small children. A walk from the center is also possible and takes about 30–40 minutes, allowing you to enjoy city views and park areas along the way.

History & Facts

This amazing corner of nature began its history on April 13, 1935. On opening day, it was visited by more than 7,000 people, which was a major event for that time. From the very beginning, guests were greeted at the entrance by the sculpture "The Good Deal" (Det gode kup), depicting a man with a bear, donated by the local Urban brewery.

The zoo has constantly evolved: in 1938, the first polar bears arrived, and in 1948, the elephants Frank and Lene arrived from India, becoming public favorites. Iconic residents in the 1960s were the orangutans Charlie and Suzy, who were true symbols of the park for many years. In 1999, the facility confirmed its status as a leading institution by receiving the world's first ISO14000 environmental certification for zoos.

In the 21st century, development has not stopped: modern zones opened, such as the "African Village" in 2006 and updated enclosures for predators. For 2025, a large-scale opening of new spaces for red pandas and Japanese cranes is planned, once again emphasizing the park's commitment to conserving rare species and creating the best conditions for its inhabitants.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all 8 hectares of the territory and watch the feeding of the inhabitants, we recommend setting aside 4 to 6 hours for your visit. This time is enough to visit all the main areas, including the African savannah and the primate pavilions.

If you are planning a trip with children, a visit to the zoo can easily take the whole day. Given the huge playground, educational shows on the ZoofariScene stage, and cozy picnic areas, you will likely want to stay here longer to enjoy the atmosphere of tranquility and nature.

Working Hours

The zoo is open to visitors daily throughout the year. The standard opening hours on weekdays (Monday to Friday) are from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. On weekends, the doors are open a bit longer so that everyone has time to enjoy their walk.
