Founded in 1918 by Aksel Olsen, the garden in Denmark has become a true living museum of nature. Here you will find thematic zones for Asia, America, and Europe, where plants grow alongside each other just as they do in their natural habitats. The site's special pride is its international award-winning rose collection, featuring thousands of specimens that fill the air with incredible fragrances during the blooming season.

This is not just a scientific site, but an ideal place for family recreation. A friendly atmosphere has been created at Geografisk Have: it is home to adorable alpacas and ponies, and there are special petting areas and cozy reading corners. To make the visit as pleasant as possible, visitors can stop by Café Lykkefund, which serves local snacks and ice cream in the best traditions of the slow food philosophy.

What to Do

A walk through the garden turns into an exciting expedition: you can start your morning in the thickets of Asian plants and, half an hour later, find yourself among North American coniferous forests. Lovers of aesthetics must spend time in the rose garden, which features the world's best varieties that have won prestigious awards. It is an ideal spot for photography and quiet contemplation of nature's beauty.

For families with children, the Geographical Garden has prepared plenty of entertainment. Be sure to stop by the animal area, where you can pet the goats or watch the graceful alpacas. Little visitors will be delighted by the opportunity to ride a pony, while the spacious green lawns are perfect for a cozy picnic on the grass.

If you want to bring a piece of this beauty home, plan your trip for June 5th. On this day, a grand Plant Market is held here, where more than a hundred vendors offer rare seedlings and garden decor. Throughout the rest of the year, you can attend educational lectures or workshops, and afterwards, enjoy a cup of coffee at Café Lykkefund, sampling local delicacies surrounded by greenery.

Getting There

Getting to this green oasis is easy, as it is conveniently located at Christian 4 Vej 23. If you are staying in the center of Kolding, a pleasant walk or bike ride will take only 10–15 minutes. The garden is located in close proximity to the famous Koldinghus castle, making it easy to combine two visits in one day.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses run regularly, stopping just a few minutes' walk from the main entrance. If you are traveling by taxi, a trip from anywhere in the city center will be quick and comfortable. For motorists, there is convenient parking on-site, making the garden highly accessible even for those traveling from afar.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in 1918 thanks to the enthusiasm and passion of Aksel Olsen. The founder did not originally plan to create a strictly scientific space; however, over time, he noticed a curious pattern: plants felt much better when planted near "neighbors" from the same climatic zones and regions of the world. It was this observation that formed the basis of the unique Geografisk Have concept.

Olsen paid special attention to Asian species, assembling one of the most impressive collections in Northern Europe. Over the decades, the garden transformed from a private nursery into a public treasure where a scientific approach blends harmoniously with landscape design aesthetics. Since 2016, under the leadership of director Lene Holm, the garden has actively developed event tourism, attracting thousands of visitors with annual markets and educational programs.

Interestingly, the pride of the garden — its rose garden — is recognized internationally. The rose collection has repeatedly won prestigious international awards, confirming the garden's status as one of the most important botanical sites in Denmark. Every plant here is a piece of living history, carefully preserved for over a hundred years.

Time Needed

To enjoy all the corners of the garden without rushing, an average visitor will need about 2–3 hours. This is enough time to leisurely walk through the geographical zones of different continents, breathe in the scents of the rose garden, and rest for a while in the shady alleys.

If you are planning a visit with children, it is worth setting aside up to 4 hours or even more. Young explorers will surely want to spend time on the playgrounds, interact with the animals, or have a proper family picnic on one of the spacious lawns. On days of major events, such as the plant market, you can easily spend the whole day in the garden.

Working Hours

The Geographical Garden welcomes guests daily, providing convenient access to its collections throughout the week. You can plan your visit any time between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

This schedule is in effect from Monday to Sunday, allowing tourists to easily fit a visit to the garden into their city sightseeing itinerary, whether on a weekday or a weekend.
