General Weather Overview

Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, has a temperate climate with four clearly defined seasons. The weather here can be quite changeable, so tourists should be prepared for various conditions depending on the time of year. In general, the climate can be described as a transition from maritime to continental, which means relatively mild but long winters and warm but not hot summers.

Winters in Stockholm are generally cold, with average temperatures in January and February around -0.8°C, often dropping below zero, especially at night. Summer, on the other hand, offers pleasant weather for walking and exploring the city: average temperatures in July and August reach 17-18°C, and maximums can rise above 20°C. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons with gradual temperature changes. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, although the data indicates a small amount of precipitation monthly, with the number of rainy days varying from 8 to 14 per month, suggesting frequent but not heavy precipitation.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Stockholm demonstrates a clear change of seasons with noticeable fluctuations throughout the year. The coldest months are traditionally January and February. In January, the average temperature is -0.8°C, with the average minimum dropping to -2.7°C and the maximum reaching 1.1°C. February is very similar: an average temperature of -0.7°C, with minimum values around -3.0°C and maximums up to 1.7°C. Conversely, the peak of warmth occurs in the summer months, especially in July, which is the warmest month with an average temperature of 17.6°C (ranging from 13.9°C at night to 21.3°C during the day). August is also very warm, with an average temperature of 17.2°C.

Summer in Stockholm, covering June, July, and August, is characterized by pleasantly warm weather. Average daytime temperatures during this period range from 20.3°C in June to 21.3°C in July, creating comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. However, nights remain refreshingly cool, with average minimum temperatures from 12.3°C to 13.9°C. Winter, from December to February, brings frosty weather. Daytime temperatures often hover around zero or slightly above (1.1°C - 1.8°C), but at night they regularly drop to -1.6°C - -3.0°C. In the winter months, diurnal temperature variations are less significant than in summer, amounting to about 3-5°C.

Spring and autumn months are transitional. In spring, the temperature gradually rises: from an average of 1.2°C in March (with night frosts down to -2.0°C) to 10.6°C in May. In autumn, the reverse process occurs: while in September the average temperature is still quite comfortable at 13.2°C, by November it drops to 3.7°C. The greatest daily temperature fluctuations are observed in April and May (the difference between the average maximum and minimum temperature is about 8-8.5°C), which should be taken into account when choosing clothes for your trip.

Precipitation

In Stockholm, according to averaged data, precipitation is distributed quite consistently throughout the year without forming a clearly defined wet or dry season. Monthly precipitation figures are low, mainly amounting to 1-2 mm. This suggests that the city is characterized more by frequent but not intense precipitation rather than heavy torrential rains.

The highest frequency of days with precipitation is observed in July and December, when an average of 14 "wet" days are recorded. In August, there are slightly fewer such days – about 13, while in January and October there are 12. The "driest" months in terms of precipitation frequency are March and April, with an average of only 8 days with precipitation. These same two months, March and April, are also distinguished by the minimum volume of precipitation (1 mm), while the other months are characterized by a figure of 2 mm.

The type of precipitation in Stockholm depends on the time of year. The winter period, from December to February, when the average air temperature hovers around the zero mark or drops lower, most often brings snow. Snowfall is also likely in November and March, at the turn of the seasons. In the warmer time of year, roughly from April to October, precipitation falls mainly in the form of rain. Given the overall small volume of monthly precipitation, this usually involves light or moderate rain rather than prolonged downpours.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Stockholm, it is important to choose your wardrobe correctly to feel comfortable in any weather. Given the changeable climate of Sweden, the best strategy is layering. Regardless of the season, be sure to bring comfortable shoes for long walks on cobblestones and the city's numerous islands. Also, don't forget a small umbrella or a light waterproof jacket, as precipitation in the form of rain or snow is possible year-round, although usually not very heavy.

In winter, from December to February, when temperatures often drop below freezing (averaging -0.8°C in January, with minimums down to -3°C), you will need a warm jacket or coat, a hat, scarf, and gloves. Thermal underwear and warm sweaters will also be useful. In spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), the weather is very variable: temperatures range from cool (about 1-5°C in March and November) to moderately warm (10-16°C in May and September). For these periods, a mid-season jacket, sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, as well as waterproof shoes, are ideal. In summer, from June to August, Stockholm is usually warm (average temperature 16-18°C, maximum can reach 20-21°C). Bring light clothing: t-shirts, shorts, dresses, but don't forget a light sweater or cardigan for evening walks, as evenings can be cool. Sunscreen and sunglasses will also come in handy on clear summer days.
