Today, the former citadel has turned into a true temple of winemaking. The Museum of the Vine and Wine (Musée de la Vigne et du Vin) is open within the castle walls, its exhibition occupying 17 halls. Visitors can learn about more than 1,500 years of history of grape cultivation in this region, seeing unique artifacts — from antique bottles to huge wooden presses from the early 18th century.

The architectural ensemble of the castle is striking in its harmony: austere defensive bastions coexist here with elegant clock towers. The view from the fortress walls over the endless rows of vines and the Rhone valley makes a visit to this place a mandatory stop for any traveler who appreciates history and aesthetics.

What to Do

The main activity at the castle is immersion into the world of enology. In the Museum of the Vine and Wine, you will see the rarest exhibits: old tools of winegrowers, collections of corkscrews, labels, and glasses. Special attention should be paid to the giant press from 1706, which still impresses with its scale. Walking through the halls, you seem to take a journey through time, studying the life and traditions of Swiss winemakers over a millennium and a half.

Panoramic view lovers should definitely climb the fortress walls and explore the towers. From the height, a breathtaking view opens up of the Alps and the neat geometric patterns of the vineyards. Don't forget to examine the ancient frescoes on the clock towers and study the medieval defense system, including the massive 13th-century keep and the semi-circular bastions that have retained their authentic appearance.

After exploring the interior, it is pleasant to stroll along the paths that run directly through the vineyards surrounding the castle. Events are often held on the grounds, and in the local tasting rooms or nearby establishments, you can try the famous wines of the Aigle region to put the knowledge gained in the museum into practice.

Getting There

Getting to Aigle Castle is very easy, as it is located within the city of the same name. The most convenient way for tourists is to use the Swiss federal railway SBB. Direct trains from Geneva, Lausanne, or Montreux will quickly take you to the Aigle railway station. From the station to the fortress gates, you can walk in just 10–15 minutes, following the signs through the picturesque city streets.

If you are traveling by car, follow the A9 (E62) motorway towards Saint-Maurice. You need the exit for Aigle. You can leave your car in one of the public parking lots in the city and then take a short walk to the castle, enjoying the views of the surrounding mountains and vines. A short drive from Montreux will take about 20–30 minutes.

For maximum comfort, you can order a taxi directly from the station, although the walking route to Place du Château 1 is considered very pleasant and not tiring. The castle is surrounded by vineyards, so the approach itself is a separate aesthetic pleasure.

History & Facts

The history of Aigle Castle began at the end of the 12th century, when the Knights of Aigle built the first watchtower here. The first written mentions of the local barony date back to 1179. Initially, it was a modest fortification controlling an important trade route between the Col du Pillon and Col des Mosses mountain passes, leading to the Rhone valley.

In the 13th century, the castle came under the influence of the powerful House of Savoy. In 1232, Count Thomas of Savoy granted these lands to the brothers de Saillon. It was during this period that the fortress began to take on its current appearance: a powerful square keep (donjon) was built, and the system of defensive walls was expanded. By the turn of the 13th–14th centuries, the castle became not only a military fortress but also an administrative center, receiving its characteristic semi-circular flanking towers for better protection.

In 1475, great changes awaited the castle — it came under the control of Bern. Interestingly, in later times, from 1804 to 1832, the historical halls housed a city hospital and a court. An even more surprising fact: until 1972, part of the premises was used as a local prison.

The modern appearance of the monument is the result of a large-scale restoration carried out in the 1970s. Archaeological research at that time allowed for the discovery of the foundations of the very first fortifications, hidden under layers of centuries, and returned the castle to its medieval majesty.

Time Needed

To leisurely explore all 17 halls of the Museum of the Vine and Wine, walk along the fortress walls, and take atmospheric photos against the backdrop of the vineyards, most visitors need from 2 to 3 hours. This time is quite sufficient for a basic introduction to the exhibition and the architecture of the complex.

If you plan to supplement your visit with a walk through the surrounding vineyards or intend to stop by the local wine cellar to taste regional varieties, you should set aside half a day for your visit. The peaceful atmosphere of this place encourages long contemplation and unhurried relaxation.

Working Hours

Aigle Castle welcomes guests throughout the year, while the operating schedule remains stable. Please note that Monday is a day off, when the museum and courtyards are closed to the public.
