What to Do

Once inside the walls of La Bâtiaz, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the age of chivalry. Be sure to visit the Knights' Hall and the ancient Wedding Chapel—these rooms have preserved the spirit of bygone eras. Inside the castle, there is a unique exhibition displaying medieval military weapons and complex defensive mechanisms, allowing you to appreciate the technological genius of past masters.

The highlight of your visit will be climbing the massive keep. The entrance to the tower is located eight meters above the ground, which is an interesting fortification feature in itself. Walking up the surviving stairs through tiers under vaulted ceilings, you will find yourself on a circular walkway under a conical roof.

From the top of the tower, a breathtaking panoramic view opens up over all of Martigny and the winding ribbon of the Rhone River. To complement the visual experience with historical context, visitors are offered a special film about the castle and its role in the fate of the surrounding lands.

Getting There

La Bâtiaz Castle is located on a rocky outcrop above the city at: Rue des Moulins 13. Martigny is an important transport hub at the foot of the Swiss Alps, so getting here is easy both by car and by train from major cities in the region.

From the railway station, you can take a local bus to the foot of the hill or walk in about 15–20 minutes. The path to the castle itself involves a rather steep climb along a designated trail, which starts about a kilometer northwest of the district's parish church. If you prefer comfort, you can take a taxi from the city center, which will take you as close as possible to the start of the walking route.

History & Facts

The history of this site dates back to the distant past: archaeologists have discovered fragments of masonry from a rectangular structure dating as far back as the 9th century. These ancient stones later served as the foundation for the massive keep that we see today. The main construction of the fortress in its Gothic form took place in the 13th century.

The castle was originally conceived by the Bishop of Sion as a key defensive post in the Rhone valley. However, its strategic position was coveted by its neighbors. In 1259, the fortress was captured by the troops of Count Peter II of Savoy, known as "Little Charlemagne." The Savoys held the castle for nine years, continuing to strengthen its walls until it returned to the bishop under a peace treaty in 1268.

The turbulent Middle Ages tested the walls of La Bâtiaz many times. At the end of the 14th century, during the height of the Burgundian Wars, the castle was again at the center of conflict. It was seriously damaged by fire, but because of its incredible importance for controlling trade routes and mountain passes, it was restored, preserving the rugged spirit of military architecture for posterity.

Time Needed

To explore all levels of the castle without rushing, study the museum collection, and enjoy the panoramas, visitors are recommended to set aside approximately 1.5–2 hours. This is enough time to climb the keep and watch the introductory film.

If you also plan to have lunch in the town below or walk along the scenic trails around the cliff, you should allow half a day for this attraction. The climb to the castle requires some physical effort, so it’s worth allowing extra time for rest and photos along the way.

Working Hours

Currently, La Bâtiaz Castle may be temporarily closed to the public. Traditionally, access inside the fortress and the museum halls is only possible when accompanied by a certified guide and via prior reservation.

Before planning your visit, we strongly recommend checking the latest information on the official website or contacting the city's tourist office, as the tour schedule may vary depending on the season and ongoing restoration work.
