General Weather Overview

The city of Nan in Thailand enjoys a tropical climate characterized by warm weather throughout the year. Average annual temperatures fluctuate slightly, remaining in a comfortable range from 22.5°C to 29.1°C, while maximum daytime temperatures can reach 35°C during the hottest months.

In Nan, two main seasons are clearly distinguished. The dry and hot season lasts roughly from November to April. During this period, precipitation is minimal (0-3 mm per month), and the number of rainy days is low, especially from December to March. From May to October comes the rainy season, peaking in July-August, when the highest amount of rainfall occurs (up to 13 mm) and the maximum number of rainy days is observed (up to 29 days in August). During this time, the weather remains warm but with increased humidity.

Thus, travellers should expect consistently warm weather in Nan with a pronounced wet season in the summer and early autumn months, and drier, sunnier weather in the winter and spring months. Transitional months, such as April and October, may demonstrate shifting weather conditions with a gradual increase or decrease in precipitation.

Temperature

The climate in the city of Nan, located in Thailand, is characterized by distinct warmth throughout the year. The average annual temperature fluctuates within a comfortable range, though there are notable seasonal changes. The hottest month is usually April, when the average temperature reaches 29.1°C, and daytime highs can rise to 35.0°C. December and January are considered the coolest months, with an average temperature of around 22.5-22.6°C and minimum night-time temperatures dropping to 16.5-16.6°C. Overall, even in the "coldest" months, the daytime temperature remains pleasant for most activities.

The summer period, which can be roughly divided into a hot dry season (March-April) and the subsequent wet season (May-October), brings high temperatures. In March and April, the daytime heat can be quite intense, with highs up to 34-35°C. From May to September, despite a slight decrease in peak temperatures (average highs around 29-33°C), high humidity is felt due to frequent rainfall, making the weather hot and muggy. During these months, the difference between day and night temperatures becomes less pronounced, usually amounting to 6-9°C due to increased cloud cover and humidity.

The winter season, falling between November and February, offers the most comfortable weather conditions in Nan. Days are usually warm and sunny, with average maximum temperatures from 28.3°C to 31.3°C. Nights and early mornings bring a pleasant coolness when temperatures drop to 16.5-19.8°C. During this period, more significant diurnal temperature fluctuations are observed; the difference between the daily maximum and nightly minimum can reach 10-13°C, which is especially noticeable in January and February. This time of year is considered the most favourable for visiting the city thanks to moderate heat and a low probability of rainfall.

Precipitation

In the city of Nan, there is a clearly marked seasonality in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year, characteristic of a monsoon climate. Distinct dry and wet seasons are evident here. Snow is not characteristic of Nan; all precipitation falls in the form of rain.

The dry season in Nan lasts approximately from November to March. The driest months are January and December, when the average rainfall is 0 mm, and the number of rainy days is minimal – just 2-3 days. February and March are also distinguished by a small amount of rainfall (about 1 mm) and a low number of days with rain, making this period the most comfortable for those who prefer to avoid the rain.

The rainy season begins in April, when the amount of precipitation and rainy days gradually increases, reaching its peak from May to September. The wettest month is considered to be August, when an average of 13 mm of precipitation falls, and it rains almost daily – about 29 days in the month. July (11 mm, 28 rainy days) and June (8 mm, 26 rainy days) are also characterized by frequent, though not always heavy, rains. In September, rainfall decreases to 9 mm with 27 rainy days, and October (4 mm, 18 rainy days) serves as a transitional period to the dry season.

What to Pack

When planning a trip to Nan, it is important to consider its tropical climate with distinct seasons. It is warm here year-round, so the foundation of your wardrobe should be light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics such as cotton or linen. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for protection against the bright sun. Comfortable walking shoes are also extremely important, as you will likely want to explore the city and its surroundings. During the period from November to February, when evenings and early mornings can be cooler (minimum temperatures drop to 16-18°C), a light jacket, sweater, or shawl will come in handy.

Nan has a clearly defined rainy season, which usually lasts from May to October, with peak rainfall and the highest number of rainy days from June to September. If your trip falls during this time, be sure to take a light waterproof raincoat or a compact umbrella. Clothing made from quick-drying materials will be very useful. Also, insect repellent may be helpful during this period. Regardless of the season, the principle of layering clothing can prove useful, allowing you to adapt to temperature changes throughout the day or when visiting air-conditioned premises.
