General Weather Overview

The climate in Phrae can be described as tropical, with a clearly defined distinction between dry and wet seasons. Generally, it is warm here throughout the year, although the weather character changes significantly depending on the month. Thanks to its location in the northern part of Thailand, the region offers tourists variety: from cool and fresh days to sweltering tropical heat.

The most comfortable time to visit is considered the period from November to February. During these months, dry and pleasant weather sets in with average temperatures around 23–25°C, while nights can be quite crisp as the air cools down to 17°C. With the arrival of March, the hot season begins: temperatures rise rapidly, reaching their peak in April, when daytime figures often exceed 35°C.

From May to October, the rainy season reigns in Phrae. During this time, the amount of precipitation increases noticeably, and the number of rainy days can reach 20–29 per month, especially in mid-summer and early autumn. Despite the high humidity, the temperature remains consistently warm, around 27–29°C. Rains are often intense but short-lived, bringing lush greenery and making the surrounding landscapes particularly picturesque.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Phrae changes depending on the season, offering travellers different conditions for their holiday. The hottest period is traditionally the spring months, especially March and April. At this time, the average temperature reaches its peak: in April, it is around 30.0°C, and daytime maximums often exceed the 35.7°C mark. This is a time of true tropical heat when the sun is most active.

The winter season, which lasts from November to February, brings pleasant coolness and is considered the most comfortable time for a visit. In December and January, the average temperature drops to 23.0°C — 23.3°C. A characteristic feature of this period is the significant difference between day and night temperatures. During the day, the air warms up to a comfortable 29°C, but after dark, it can cool down to 17.0°C, so it is recommended to bring light outerwear for evening walks.

The summer months and the beginning of autumn (from June to October) are characterised by stable warmth without extreme fluctuations. The average temperature holds at the level of 26°C — 27°C, and the night-time coolness practically disappears — minimum figures rarely drop below 24°C. During this period, the heat feels milder than in spring, but due to high humidity, the air may seem denser and muggier.

Precipitation

The climate in Phrae is characterised by a clear division into a dry season and a rainy season, which is typical for the northern part of Thailand. Precipitation here falls exclusively in the form of rain. The most favourable and dry period is considered the time from November to March. During these months, the probability of getting caught in the rain is minimal: for example, in January and December, the amount of precipitation tends towards zero, and the number of rainy days is only 2–3 for the entire month.

The rainy season begins in May and continues until October, gradually gaining strength. The wettest and gloomiest month is August, when the highest amount of precipitation and up to 29 rainy days are recorded. July and September are also distinguished by a high frequency of rain (28 and 26 days respectively), so travellers planning a trip at this time should be prepared for daily rainfall.

Transitional periods, such as April and October, demonstrate the change of seasons. In April, the number of wet days begins to increase (about 8 days), heralding the arrival of the monsoons, while in October, the intensity of the rains begins to subside (17 days), preparing the region for the start of the dry season.

What to Pack

When packing for Phrae, opt for light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics, which will ensure comfort in Thailand's warm climate. In the hot months, especially in March and April when the temperature rises above +30°C, you will definitely need sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen. Do not forget comfortable walking shoes, as you will have plenty of walking to do around the city and its surroundings.

If your trip falls during the rainy season (from May to October), be prepared for frequent rainfall. During this period, it is worth putting a quality raincoat or a compact umbrella, as well as quick-drying clothes, in your suitcase. Footwear should be practical and water-resistant — trekking sandals are ideal. Despite the rain, the air remains warm, so there is no need to dress too warmly; the main thing is to protect yourself from moisture.

For travel during the winter months (from November to February), it is recommended to use the layering principle. Days remain sunny and warm, but nights can be quite fresh, with temperatures around +17°C. A light jacket, windbreaker, or thick hoodie will become indispensable items for evening strolls or early departures for excursions.
