General Weather Overview

Antalya, located on the sunny coast of Turkey, boasts a distinct Mediterranean climate. This means that a long, hot, and predominantly dry summer awaits you here, while winters are generally mild and wetter. Such a climate makes Antalya an attractive holiday destination almost all year round, although the character of the weather changes noticeably depending on the season.

The summer months, especially from June to September, are characterized by high temperatures, often exceeding 30°C, and minimal rainfall. July and August are the driest, with practically no rain. Winter, from December to February, brings more cloudy days and precipitation, while the temperature remains quite comfortable, rarely dropping to freezing. Spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November) are pleasant transitional seasons with moderate temperatures and fewer rainy days than in winter, creating excellent conditions for excursions and active leisure.

Temperature

In Antalya, the temperature pattern throughout the year demonstrates a classic Mediterranean picture with distinct seasonal changes. The hottest months are undoubtedly July and August, when the average maximum air temperature confidently stays above 33°C, and the average overall temperature is around 27-28°C. Conversely, the coolest months are January and February. During this period, the average temperature fluctuates around 7-8.5°C, while night-time lows can drop to 3-4°C, although frost is a rare phenomenon for the coast.

Summer in Antalya is a true synonym for scorching heat and bright sun. Starting from June until the end of September, the thermometer during the day regularly rises to 29-34°C, with July and August standing out as the peak months of heat. Nights bring some relief but remain very warm: the average minimum temperature in June is about 17°C, and in July and August, it rises to 21.5°C. Such a noticeable difference between day and night temperatures, reaching 10-12 degrees, allows for a little rest from the daytime heat, especially if you are by the sea or in a well-ventilated place.

The winter period in Antalya, from December to February, is characterized by mildness and the absence of severe cold. Average daytime temperatures at this time are usually in the comfortable range of 11-13°C, which is perfect for walks and exploring the surroundings. At night, the temperature drops to 3-6°C. Although the weather generally remains pleasant, especially compared to the harsh winters of many other regions, it is worth being prepared for cooler evenings. The differences between daytime and night-time readings in winter are less pronounced than in summer but still perceptible, amounting to approximately 7-9 degrees.

Precipitation

Antalya observes a typical Mediterranean climate pattern of precipitation distribution throughout the year, with a clearly defined wet winter season and a very dry summer. This means that the likelihood of encountering rain depends heavily on the month of your trip, allowing you to plan your holiday quite accurately depending on your weather preferences.

The highest amount of precipitation in Antalya falls during the winter months. January and December are the wettest: on average, 7 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days reaches 16 in each. This means that approximately half of the days in these months can be rainy. February (4 mm, 13 rainy days) and March (3 mm, 13 rainy days) also belong to the wet period, as does November (4 mm, 10 rainy days), when rainfall begins to increase, heralding winter. Winter precipitation is predominantly rain, which, judging by the ratio of precipitation amount to the number of rainy days, can be frequent but not always intense.

Summer in Antalya is a period of almost complete absence of rain. July and August are absolutely dry months when no precipitation is recorded (0 mm), and the probability of rain is minimal – only 2-3 days with possible precipitation. September (1 mm, 4 rainy days) and June (2 mm, 10 rainy days) are also very dry; notably, in June, with a small volume of precipitation, there are relatively many rainy days, indicating very light and short rains. The spring months of April (2 mm, 8 rainy days) and May (2 mm, 11 rainy days), as well as October (2 mm, 6 rainy days), are transitional, with a small amount of precipitation, which most often takes the form of light and short-lived rain.

What to Pack

When packing your suitcase for a trip to Antalya, it is important to consider its Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild wet winters. For the summer months (June-September), when the temperature often rises above 30°C (reaching 33-34°C in July-August), and rainfall is practically absent, your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable clothing: cotton t-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and, of course, swimwear. It is extremely important to bring a hat, sunglasses, and cream with high SPF, as the sun in Antalya is very active. Comfortable open shoes, such as sandals, will be ideal for the beach and leisurely walks.

In the winter months (December-February), the weather in Antalya becomes cooler, with average temperatures around 7-13°C (minimums can drop to 3-5°C) and a noticeable increase in the number of rainy days – up to 16 in January and December, with total precipitation of 4-7 mm in these months. Therefore, it is worth taking warmer clothes with you: sweaters, jeans or thick trousers, as well as a light but warm jacket, preferably waterproof, or at least a compact umbrella. For the transitional seasons (spring: March-May, and autumn: October-November), when the temperature changes gradually and the number of rainy days varies from 6 to 13, the best strategy would be layering. T-shirts that can be supplemented with a cardigan or fleece jacket, and a light jacket will allow you to feel comfortable in changeable weather. Regardless of the season, comfortable closed shoes, for example, trainers, will be indispensable for sightseeing and long walks around the city.
