Travel Tips

When planning a trip to Erzurum, it is worth considering its high-altitude location and the cultural features of the region. To ensure your journey is as comfortable as possible, we have prepared several important recommendations.

  1. Seasonal Clothing. This is one of the coldest cities in Turkey. Even in summer, evenings here can be cool, and in winter, warm, windproof clothing, thermal underwear, and sturdy footwear are essential.
  2. Transport. In the city centre, many attractions are within walking distance. For trips to more distant locations, it is convenient to use inexpensive local taxis.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). Cards are accepted in hotels and large restaurants, but always carry cash for payments in small shops and taxis.
  4. Health and Altitude. The city is located at an altitude of about 1900 metres. Give your body time to acclimatise, drink plenty of water, and use sunscreen — the mountain sun is very active.
  5. Communication. In tourist zones, staff may speak English, but knowing a few basic phrases in Turkish ("hello", "thank you") will be very useful.
  6. Dress Code and Etiquette. The region is quite conservative. It is recommended to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, especially when visiting religious sites.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not take photos of local residents without their permission and avoid discussing sensitive political topics.
  8. Gastronomic Tip. Be sure to try the famous Cağ Kebabı — a horizontally rotating lamb kebab, which is the culinary trademark of the city.

Following these simple rules will help you adapt faster and have a wonderful experience of Eastern hospitality.
