History & Facts

This site owes its existence to the enterprise and vision of Edward Bliss, a 19th-century local businessman. Bliss made his fortune supplying flint to the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars. In the early 1820s, he purchased a vast plot of land and began building his estate, the centerpiece of which was Brandon Park House — a grand Regency-style mansion completed in 1826.

Edward Bliss did more than just build a house; he created a unique landscape, establishing a walled garden and an arboretum filled with exotic trees from around the world. One of the most enigmatic structures from that era is the Gothic mausoleum, faced with the famous Brandon flint. In the 19th century, local flint was considered the best in the world and was used for gunflints, bringing prosperity to the town.

The park's history as a public space began much later. After changing hands several times and being transferred to the Forestry Commission in 1927, the grounds were eventually transformed. Brandon Country Park officially opened to the general public in 1973, preserving the charm of the old estate and becoming a part of the national heritage.

Interestingly, the mausoleum where the Bliss family was once interred now has unusual residents — colonies of bats. The park's proximity to the River Little Ouse also serves as a reminder of the days when Brandon was an important transport hub, with goods delivered on flat-bottomed punts long before the arrival of the railway.

Time Needed

To fully enjoy the park's atmosphere at a leisurely pace, we recommend allowing 2 to 4 hours for your visit. This is usually enough time to stroll along the main arboretum trails, examine the Gothic mausoleum, and explore the walled garden.

If you are planning a trip with children who will want to spend time at the play areas, or if you wish to have a full picnic by the pond, it is worth setting aside half a day. Nature lovers and hikers can easily spend more time here, using the park as a gateway to the vast stretches of Thetford Forest.

Working Hours

The park is warmly open to visitors daily from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, seven days a week. This allows you to plan anything from a morning stroll to an afternoon escape into nature.
