The establishment occupies part of Maclaines Warehouse, a 19th-century architectural monument. Here, they brew eclectic beer varieties: from thick milk stouts and juicy IPAs to refreshing German Hefeweizens and classic lagers. The interior harmoniously combines the ruggedness of old brick walls with the coziness of a modern bar overlooking the River Exe and the Exeter Canal.

In addition to the tasting room, the project boasts its own beer garden, which is especially beautiful in the rays of the setting sun. Visitors appreciate this spot not only for the drinks but also for the friendly service and the opportunity to grab a bite from regularly rotating food trucks offering everything from freshly baked pizza to artisanal snacks.

What to Do

At Topsham Brewery & Taproom, guests can do more than just have a glass of beer; they can immerse themselves in the creation process. Through glass partitions in the hall, you can watch the brewing equipment in action while the bartender pours you one of the fresh releases—such as a signature session ale or an experimental stout.

Special attention should be paid to the gastronomic experiences. Food vans with authentic pizza or other snacks are often parked at the entrance. The venue has a relaxed atmosphere: German-style seating (long tables and benches) encourages socializing, while the outdoor terrace allows you to admire the slow flow of the water for hours.

For culture lovers, the taproom offers live music and DJ sets. If you are interested in history, be sure to find the portrait of Benjamin Salter in the interior—a legendary 19th-century brewer. This place is equally suitable for a quiet family afternoon or lively parties in the evening.

Getting There

Located on the famous Exeter Quayside (Haven Banks area), the brewery is situated in one of the city's most picturesque spots. This popular pedestrian zone between the River Exe and the canal is easily accessible on foot from the center in about 20–30 minutes, allowing you to enjoy views of the old port along the way.

For those who prefer public transport, buses run regularly from the city center to stops located just a few minutes' walk from the quayside. The venue is also convenient to reach by bicycle via dedicated paths along the water. If you choose to take a taxi, the trip from the central station will take no more than 10 minutes.

For drivers, parking is available right next to the Maclaines Warehouse building. Access to the taproom and shop is via stairs at the side of the building. Given the popularity of the quayside on evenings and weekends, guests are advised to plan their arrival time in advance.

History & Facts

The history of this place began in the summer of 2003 when a small eco-brewery was founded in Exminster. However, the project's true flourishing came after its move to Exeter. In 2018, the production and taproom took over space in the historic Maclaines Warehouses complex, which had stood empty for over twenty years following the closure of the Maritime Museum.

The Maclaines Warehouses building itself is a Grade II listed building. These warehouses, built in the mid-19th century, serve as a living reminder of the times when the city was an important trade port in Great Britain. The high ceilings and industrial-style interior allow guests to literally touch the region's maritime past while sipping modern craft beer.

A special connection to tradition is highlighted by the portrait of Benjamin Salter hanging in the hall. Salter was the founder of the original Exeter Brewery back in 1834 and a prominent figure in city life. In 2012, his descendants presented this historic portrait to the owners of the current brewery, symbolically uniting the old and new history of brewing in these parts.

Time Needed

For a typical visit, including tasting several flagship beers and a light snack in the fresh air, you should allow about 1.5–2 hours. This is plenty of time to explore the interior of the historic warehouse and enjoy the quayside atmosphere.

If you plan to attend one of the music evenings or a DJ performance, which regularly take place in the taproom on weekends, it's better to set aside 3–4 hours. The spacious hall and cozy beer garden are perfect for a long relaxation in the company of friends.

Working Hours

The venue is open daily, offering both afternoon and evening relaxation sessions. From Monday to Thursday, the doors are open from 16:00 to 23:00. At the end of the week, the schedule expands: on Friday and Saturday, the taproom welcomes guests from 12:00 to midnight, and on Sunday from 12:00 to 23:00.

Please note that on weekdays (Monday to Wednesday), the space may be booked for private events, so it is recommended to check for up-to-date information on the official brewery website or their social media before your visit.
