The complex brings several key facilities under one roof: the DH Lawrence Pavilion theater, four modern exhibition galleries, and the university museum. The Djanogly Recital Hall deserves special mention, as it is renowned for its outstanding acoustics—it is frequently chosen by the BBC for professional recordings and classical music broadcasts.

The center's program is incredibly diverse and updated year-round. You can find everything here, from avant-garde dance productions and children's plays to serious archaeological exhibitions featuring artifacts from the East Midlands. Thanks to the support of philanthropists and the university, this site has become an accessible and inspiring space for every visitor, offering a unique blend of education and leisure.

What to Do

A visit to Lakeside Arts offers a kaleidoscope of experiences for all ages. Music lovers can book a ticket for an evening concert at the Djanogly Recital Hall, while theater enthusiasts can enjoy productions at the DH Lawrence Pavilion, where the intimate atmosphere allows you to fully immerse yourself in the performance. Both classic plays and contemporary experimental pieces are staged here.

During the day, it's worth stopping by the center's galleries to discover the works of contemporary artists or heading to the University Museum. The latter has been twice named "Museum of the Year" in Nottinghamshire and houses rare archaeological finds from the region. Families with children will particularly enjoy the annual Wheee! festival and regular free workshops that inspire creativity through nature.

You can end your walk with a pleasant lunch at the Pavilion Café, which offers relaxing views of the lake. Also, don't forget to visit the local shop, which sells unique pieces by British artisans and souvenirs inspired by current exhibitions and the university's collections.

Getting There

Getting to Lakeside Arts is easy, as the complex is located just a couple of miles from the city center. The most convenient way is to use the NET tram line, which goes to the University of Nottingham stop. From the tram platform, it is just a few minutes' leisurely walk to the gallery entrance.

Regular buses (routes 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) also run from the railway station and the central squares. If you prefer a taxi, the journey from the center takes no more than 10–15 minutes. For those who enjoy walking or cycling, the path through the university campus makes for a pleasant addition to the trip.

Drivers can use the pay-and-display parking within the university grounds. The center is most easily accessed from Beeston Road or Middleton Boulevard. The entire complex is fully equipped for visitors with limited mobility and is easily accessible for those with strollers.

History & Facts

Interestingly, before the cultural center appeared here, the site was home to the Highfields Lido—at one time the largest open-air swimming pool in the country. The transformation of this area into an arts cluster began in the 1990s at the initiative of Sir Colin Campbell, then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham.

The first to open its doors was the Djanogly Gallery, and in 2001, the DH Lawrence Pavilion was officially launched, featuring a 213-seat theater. The history of the university itself, which supports the center, dates back to 1881, and its move to University Park in 1928 was made possible by the generosity of philanthropist Jesse Boot.

Over the years, Lakeside Arts has welcomed nearly 3 million visitors. Private donations from the Djanogly, Angear, and Wallner families, after whom the center's halls and studios are named, played a vital role in the expansion of the complex. Today, it is recognized as one of the leading cultural centers in the Midlands, bringing together academic collections and world-class art.

Time Needed

For a quick overview of the grounds, visiting one of the temporary exhibitions, and a walk along the lake, 2–3 hours is usually sufficient. This is enough time to soak in the park's atmosphere and take a look at the museum section of the center.

If you plan to attend a full concert at the Djanogly Recital Hall, a theatrical performance, or take part in one of the creative workshops, you should budget 3 to 4 hours for your visit. Combining the cultural program with lunch at the café and a walk through all of Highfields Park will turn your trip into a delightful half-day outing.

Working Hours

The main building of the center is open to visitors on weekdays from 08:00 to 16:00. On weekends (Saturday and Sunday), Lakeside Arts operates on a reduced schedule—from 10:00 to 16:00.

It is worth noting that during evening concerts and plays, opening hours are extended: events typically begin at 18:00 or 19:30. It is recommended to check the official website before your trip, as gallery and museum schedules may change depending on current exhibitions and public holidays.
