What to Do

There’s something for everyone here. Start your visit on the first floor: grab a cozy vinyl booth and order the famous affordable breakfast (for just $1.99!) or a full dinner. Between meals, visitors enjoy playing pool or trying their hand at shuffleboard — a rare find that has become a signature of this bar.

For those seeking more action, there's nightly karaoke where you can show off your talents to a friendly crowd. If you're looking for dancing and energy, head to the second floor — Top of the Peacock. On Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays after 9:00 PM, the dance floor lights up with DJs, and a stylish square bar opens in the center of the room.

A special pleasure is simply observing local life. You might find hippies, veterans, students, and tourists sitting at adjacent tables. Don't forget to notice the vintage wood paneling and interior elements that hold Peacock stories — thousands of personal tales gathered over the bar's nearly century-long history.

Getting There

Finding Tom's Peacock Bar & Grill is easy, as it is located in the heart of the city at 125 SW 2nd St. The establishment is in close proximity to the Oregon State University campus, making it a popular stop on walking tours of downtown.

If you're planning a trip from other cities, such as Portland or Salem, the drive via I-5 and OR-34 takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. In the city center, look for Second Street. Keep in mind that downtown parking can be limited, so it's worth considering nearby paid parking options.

For those who prefer public transport, city buses run regularly, and the bar is an easy walk from central stops. Taxis and ride-sharing services are also readily available to whisk you from anywhere in the city to the doors of this historic building.

History & Facts

The history of this location began long before the first pint was poured. In the early 20th century, the building at 125-127 SW 2nd Street housed a furniture store, and even earlier, it was home to the city’s only brick stable, owned by the legendary Sheriff Solomon King.

Peacock Bar & Grill itself opened in 1929. This was a time of great change: Philomath College closed that same year, and local transport finally fully transitioned to automobiles. The establishment moved to its current building in the 1940s, cementing its status as an important social hub.

Interestingly, in 1986, the second floor, known as Top of the Peacock, was included by Playboy magazine in its list of the "Top 100 College Bars." Over the decades, the bar has witnessed many iconic city events, including the invention of the flea collar at the local university in 1964 and the opening of the HP plant in 1976.

Today, the venue, affectionately called "The Cock" by locals, continues to be a living monument to history. Since 2005, it has been managed by the current owner, preserving the exact atmosphere that generations of students and residents have come to love.

Time Needed

How much time to spend at Tom's Peacock Bar & Grill largely depends on your plans. If you're just stopping by for a bite or to admire the historic interior over a beer, 1–2 hours should be plenty.

However, if your visit falls on a Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday evening when the upper floor opens with its dance floor and DJs, your stay might last much longer. Fans of karaoke, pool, and late-night parties typically spend 3 to 5 hours here, soaking up the energetic atmosphere of Top of the Peacock.
