The park is named after Joseph T. Jones, a prominent entrepreneur who played a key role in the region's development. It was he who funded the construction of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad, co-founded Gulfport, and transformed it into a major maritime hub. The land was donated to the city in 1935 by his heir, Grace Jones Stewart.

The park's history has seen its share of challenges. In 2005, during the devastating Hurricane Katrina, the area was completely submerged, with water levels rising more than 7 meters. Almost all the infrastructure was destroyed, marking the beginning of a massive rebirth.

It took seven years to restore "Mississippi's Front Yard." Thanks to federal funding and the efforts of local authorities, the renovated Jones Park reopened its gates in May 2012. Today, the city's maritime heritage is commemorated by an impressive 20-ton anchor in the central plaza—a gift from the Seabees unit.

For a standard visit, most tourists need about 2 to 4 hours. This is plenty of time to stroll along the promenade, admire the lighthouse replica, and take photos with the marina in the background. If you're traveling with children, they will likely want to spend more time at the water play area.
