Morristown Green

About

Morristown Green is the cozy historical heart of Morristown, a picturesque green space in the shape of a keel. Located in the very center of New Jersey, this park is one of only two traditional town greens remaining in this part of the USA. First mentioned on maps in the early 18th century, it is a significant piece of the country's cultural heritage.

For centuries, the park served as the epicenter of public life: a courthouse, jail, and old churches were once located here. Today, this well-kept space of about one hectare is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The park is surrounded by architectural landmarks and historic taverns that create a unique colonial-era atmosphere right in the middle of a modern city.

Today, Morristown Green is more than just a historical monument; it is a living public space. Here you can see sprawling ancient trees, well-maintained walking paths, and monuments commemorating the region's heroic past. A notable feature is the famous spruce with a gold star, which has become an important symbol of remembrance for local residents.

What to Do

Everyone will find something to do at Morristown Green, whether it's a leisurely stroll through shady alleys or exploring historical monuments. The park is perfect for an outdoor picnic or reading a book on one of the benches. Tourists often come here to photograph the Civil War monument and the expressive "The Patriot's Farewell" fountain, dedicated to the events of the American Revolution.

Of particular interest is the bronze sculpture group capturing the historic meeting of George Washington with his comrades. Throughout the year, the park transforms into a lively stage for cultural events: open-air concerts, holiday fairs, festivals, and exhibitions are held here regularly. This place is rightfully called the city's "living room," where modern residents socialize and tourists immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past.

History & Facts

The history of Morristown Green is inextricably linked to the birth of the American nation. It was first recorded on maps in 1715 as a typical community common for grazing livestock and other settler needs. Around 1740, the famous Arnold’s Tavern opened on the north side, which, along with the courthouse and jail, turned this spot into the pulsing heart of the town.

During the American Revolution, the park served as a military base: Continental Army soldiers trained here under the supervision of George Washington himself, who stayed at Arnold’s Tavern during the winter of 1777. A landmark event was the meeting of Washington with Alexander Hamilton and the Marquis de Lafayette on May 10, 1780. It was here that the Commander-in-Chief received word that France was sending its troops to support the Americans.

In 1816, a group of trustees purchased the land from the Presbyterian church with the noble goal of preserving it "as a common forever for public use." From the mid-19th century, the park began to take on its modern landscaped appearance with picturesque paths and century-old trees. In 1871, a monument to Civil War veterans was erected here, becoming one of the main architectural features of the square.

Time Needed

A 30–60 minute visit is enough for a quick introduction to the park and its main monuments. This is plenty of time to stroll along the paths, read the information plaques, and take photos by the fountain.

If you plan to have a picnic on the grass, relax away from the hustle and bustle, or attend a cultural event, allow for 1–2 hours. Combined with touring nearby historic buildings and visiting cozy cafes, your walk could extend to half a day.

Working Hours

Morristown Green is open 24/7 to all visitors. You can enjoy its beauty under the morning sun or during an evening stroll by lamplight.

While the park itself is always accessible, the times for festivals, concerts, and other official events may vary. To check the current schedule of holiday events, it is recommended to visit the park's official website before your trip.
