What to Do

At The Horses Lounge, visitors could immerse themselves in the authentic atmosphere of a classic American bar. It was the perfect place to unwind after a busy day, order a favorite drink, and spend time in the company of old friends or new acquaintances. The interior and setting encouraged long conversations and leisurely relaxation.

Special attention was always paid to socializing here. Guests valued the venue for its friendly staff and welcoming environment, where everyone could feel like an invited guest. Spending evenings in such a place allowed tourists to see the real, non-touristy life of the city and become part of the local community, even if just for one night.

Many came here specifically to enjoy the unique "old school" vibe that is rarely found in modern chain clubs. It was a place for creating memories, discussing news, and simple human warmth within the cozy walls of the historic lounge.

Getting There

The legendary lounge was located at 912 McClellan Street, in the central part of the city. This location was always characterized by good accessibility, being in a busy area easily reached by both private car and public transport.

For those who prefer a taxi, the ride from the city center takes just a few minutes. If you plan to drive yourself, parking spaces were usually available in the vicinity of the establishment. The city is located in the eastern part of New York State, in the picturesque Capital Region, about 15 kilometers northwest of Albany.

Schenectady's public transport also allows for convenient travel between districts, and its proximity to major city thoroughfares made The Horses Lounge a popular point on the map for evening routes of both locals and tourists.

History & Facts

The history of The Horses Lounge began back in 1976 when Fred Fritzen and his wife Gladys opened the doors of their establishment to its first guests. For nearly 47 years, this bar remained a true family business, carefully passed down from generation to generation. After Gladys passed away in 2002, Fred continued to run the lounge on his own, preserving its unique traditions and coziness.

In 2014, the founders' son, Christian Fritzen, joined the management after returning to the city to help his father. After Fred's passing in 2021, Christian took full responsibility for the business. However, time takes its toll, and after decades of successful operation, the difficult decision was made to close. On June 30, 2023, the establishment officially concluded its glorious history.

The farewell to the legendary place was touching: the owner noted that the years of work were physically and emotionally intense, and it was time to focus on health. Notably, all funds remaining from unused gift cards and charitable donations were given to the City Mission of Schenectady, serving as a worthy final note in the history of this kind and welcoming place.

Time Needed

To fully experience the spirit of a classic American bar and enjoy its interior at a leisurely pace, visitors usually set aside about 2–3 hours. This time is quite sufficient to take a break from the city bustle and soak in the history of the place.

Even if you just stopped by to take a look at the legendary location, it's worth staying longer to appreciate the design details and the special energy created here over decades. A brief visit won't allow you to fully feel the hospitality for which this family-owned establishment was always famous.
