The establishment combines three concepts: a cozy specialty coffee shop, a full kitchen serving homemade dishes, and a premium grocery market. Here, you can not only grab a bite but also purchase local delicacies, exquisite sweets, or high-quality staples. The interior, with its restored brick walls, carefully preserves traces of the past, creating a unique "third place" atmosphere where neighbors meet to socialize and tourists come to immerse themselves in New York State history.

The market has earned particular popularity for its attention to detail: from a seasonal menu featuring ingredients from local farms to a special walk-up window for customers with dogs. With a 4.8 rating, Arthur’s Market is rightfully considered one of the most soulful and hospitable places in the city, offering guests not just food, but a genuine experience of connecting with the local community.

History & Facts

The history of this place began back in 1795, when the building at the corner of North Ferry and Front Streets was built by the town of Rotterdam. It originally served as a market where farmers could sell fresh produce to the residents of the rapidly growing Schenectady. Remarkably, the building has maintained its commercial function for more than 225 years.

In the mid-20th century, the market gained legendary status thanks to the Polachek family. Arthur Polachek, and later his son Pete, turned this place into a true symbol of the neighborhood. In recognition of their contribution to the community, the square in front of the building was unofficially named "Polachek Square" in 2009. After Pete's retirement, the establishment changed hands several times until it found a new lease on life with a new owner.

The modern chapter of Arthur’s Market began in March 2021. The new owner, Haley Priebe, carried out an extensive restoration, striving to preserve the historic appearance as much as possible. During the work, the original brick walls were uncovered, where you can still see traces of bricked-up old doorways—silent witnesses to the building's evolution over two centuries. Today, it is not just a cafe, but a living monument to US history, combining antique charm with modern comfort.
