What to Do

At Barrier Brewing, visitors can expect full immersion into craft culture. Start your journey with a tasting flight: for a reasonable price, you’ll receive a set of five different varieties, allowing you to appreciate the craftsmanship of the local brewers. Be sure to try their flagship IPA called Money, or choose something from the seasonal releases, which are often named with inspiration from the ocean coast and surfing.

The taproom interior encourages relaxation: you can admire the modern art on the walls or watch the process in the production area. On Thursdays, the brewery hosts experimental nights, when unique, one-off batches of beer are put on tap that can't be found anywhere else. And for those who are hungry, the best local food trucks often stand at the entrance, offering fish tacos, burgers, and other snacks that pair perfectly with a cold brew.

Don't forget to check out the to-go area—here you can purchase freshly bottled or canned beer, or fill your growler with your favorite variety. The friendly staff is happy to share the finer details of brewing each ale, turning a simple trip to the bar into an educational tour through the world of hops and malt.

Getting There

The brewery is located at 3001 New St Suite A2, Oceanside. Driving here from New York City takes approximately 45–60 minutes via the Belt Parkway or Southern State Parkway. If you are arriving from JFK Airport, the trip takes about 20–30 minutes, and from LaGuardia, it’s about 45 minutes.

For those preferring public transport, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is an ideal option. You need to get off at the Oceanside station (Long Beach branch). From the station, the brewery is a 10–15 minute walk, or a quick couple of minutes by taxi or Uber.

Since a visit usually involves tasting alcoholic beverages, we strongly recommend using a taxi or rideshare services for your return trip to ensure your outing remains safe and comfortable.

History & Facts

The story of Barrier Brewing began in 2009, when Evan Klein, after gaining experience at the famous Brooklyn-based Sixpoint Brewery, decided to start his own business. The first batch of beer was brewed in a tiny warehouse space of just 1,000 square feet. Despite the modest scale, the team managed to produce over 700 barrels of beer in their first year of operation.

In 2012, the company moved to a larger facility but was almost immediately faced with a major challenge — Hurricane Sandy. The brewery was flooded, resulting in nearly $100,000 in damages. However, thanks to the incredible support of the craft community and collaborative projects with other breweries (such as Barrier Relief Ale), production was restored by February 2013.

The name Barrier refers to the geography of the region: Evan Klein grew up near the Long Beach barrier island. Today, it is a modern facility with a powerful 20-barrel system, capable of producing up to 15,000 barrels of beer per year.

Over the years, they have created approximately 500 unique varieties. The brewery's journey is an evolution from classic English and Belgian traditions to ultra-modern IPAs, rich imperial stouts, and experimental sour ales, making it one of the most respected independent breweries in the state.

Time Needed

You should plan for 1 to 3 hours for a visit to Barrier Brewing. If your goal is a quick tasting and buying some fresh beer to go, one hour is plenty of time to try a flight and pick a favorite.

However, most guests prefer to stay longer, especially if one of the popular food trucks is parked at the brewery. In this case, the visit turns into a full lunch or dinner in a relaxed atmosphere, where you can leisurely discuss the flavor profiles of the drinks with friends or chat with local regulars.
