At various times, the mountain was home to a resort hotel, an observation tower, and even an amusement park featuring a roller coaster and an 800-seat theater, making it the state's premier tourist magnet.

The park's most recognizable symbol, the Roanoke Star, was first illuminated on November 23, 1949. Originally intended as a temporary Christmas decoration to attract shoppers to the city's stores, it became so beloved by residents that it was made a permanent monument. Thanks to the star, the city earned its famous nickname — "Star City".

For a thorough exploration of Mill Mountain Park, visitors are recommended to set aside 2 to 4 hours. If your goal is simply to take photos with the Roanoke Star and enjoy the city panorama from the overlook, about 45–60 minutes should be sufficient.
