The history of this scenic spot began in 1888, when it was founded under the modest name "South Park." The landscape was designed by the famous Frederick Law Olmsted. He aimed to create a space where the river, forests, and open meadows would harmoniously blend into a single pastoral landscape, offering city dwellers a respite from industrial bustle.

One of the most curious facts is that in 1893, on Olmsted's recommendation, a flock of 80 sheep was brought to the park. The animals not only enhanced the rural atmosphere but also performed a practical task — naturally "trimming" the vast lawns. During the same decade, extensive landscaping work was carried out: more than 62,000 trees and shrubs were planted.

In the early 20th century, the park's appearance underwent changes. In 1917, the golf course was expanded, and a year later, the Erie Canal (now the New York State Barge Canal) was cut through the territory, adding new water features to the landscape. Despite the subsequent construction of highways in the surrounding area, the park has managed to preserve its unique atmosphere and the historic layout of the great master Olmsted.

To simply stroll along the main paths and enjoy the river views, you will need about 1–2 hours. However, the park is so large that a quick look might not be enough to truly feel its charm.

Most visitors prefer to spend half a day (3 to 4 hours) here, combining a walk with a picnic or active outdoor games. If you plan a full round of golf or a long kayak trip along the canal, it is worth dedicating an entire day to visiting this place.

Genesee Valley Park is hospitably open to visitors daily. You can plan your visit from early morning until late evening, as the standard operating schedule is from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Monday through Sunday.

Keep in mind that some areas or sports facilities may have their own restrictions depending on the season or special events, so it is best to choose daylight hours for active recreation.
