The history of this area dates back to the 18th century. The first documented mention of Laguna Lake appeared in 1769 in the diary of the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá. At that time, the lake was more of a large seasonal lagoon or marshland, the size of which changed depending on the rainfall.

In the 19th century, attempts were made to completely drain these lands for agricultural needs, as the soil here was incredibly fertile. The drainage work was led by the prominent local figure Ah Louis, under whose direction Chinese laborers dug a canal over a mile long. However, the transformation of the lake into a permanent body of water in its current form didn't happen until around 1959, when the Prefumo Creek stream bed was intentionally diverted into the lagoon basin during road construction.

The modern look of the park is the result of a long battle against siltation and droughts. Since 1982, the Laguna Lake Management Program has been in place to maintain water clarity and preserve the unique ecosystem. Interestingly, the soil removed from the lake bed during dredging was used to shape the shorelines and the landscape of the park itself.

To leisurely walk through the area and enjoy the views, it usually takes about 1 to 3 hours. If your goal is a quick walk along the two-mile loop around the lake, one hour will be quite enough.
