The history of this site is inextricably linked to William Meek, a prominent pioneer of commercial horticulture in California. Arriving on the West Coast in 1846 with a supply of valuable seeds and saplings, Meek eventually acquired about 3,000 acres of land here. In 1869, he built the magnificent Meek Mansion, which became the center of his vast estate. It was thanks to his cherry, apricot, and plum orchards that the surrounding district earned its name—Cherryland.

The Meek family owned the estate until 1940, after which ownership passed through several hands until the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) purchased the territory in 1964. For the sum of $270,000, the public gained access to a unique monument of architecture and landscape art. By 1973, the mansion was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Interestingly, the building fell into disrepair in the 1980s and was closed due to wear and tear. However, thanks to the joint efforts of the authorities and the Hayward Area Historical Society (HAHS), a large-scale restoration began. Nearly $2 million was spent to restore the house, stables, and surrounding grounds, preserving the 19th-century estate's appearance for future generations.

Today, the mansion serves as a museum where visitors can learn about three different periods of the Meek family history. Meek Mansion is recognized as a California Point of Historical Interest, serving as a living testament to the region's agricultural boom in the post-Gold Rush era.
